Before Agatha All Along even premiered, Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza teased that there would be romantic tension between their characters, Agatha Harkness and Rio Vidal (Lady Death). However, no one could have predicted the depth of their past relationship or the tragic way it ended.

It was later revealed that Agatha and Rio were once in a romantic relationship, which came to a heartbreaking end when Rio was forced to “reap” Agatha’s son, Nicholas.

Agatha struck a deal with Death: she would deliver the souls of witches in exchange for limited time with her son. Unfortunately, when Nicholas refused to continue sacrificing witches, he passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Agatha and Rio have been enemies ever since, with Rio continuing to hunt Agatha due to her unnaturally long lifespan—though the exact reason behind Rio’s desire to kill Agatha remains unclear. Despite their battles, Rio refers to Agatha as her biggest emotional scar and is visibly hurt when Agatha sacrifices herself to save Billy in the show’s penultimate episode.

Aubrey Plaza recently sat down with VMagazine to talk about her on-screen relationship with Kathryn Hahn, calling it a “dream come true.” Plaza explained that working with Hahn was both intense and exciting, as both actresses bring a strong, passionate energy to their performances.

She highlighted the emotional chemistry between their characters, particularly in a darkly romantic scene where her character, Vidal, heals Agatha’s wound in a deeply charged moment.

Kathryn and I are both very intense in our approach to acting, so I knew it was going to be really charged.

Plaza also revealed that Agatha All Along featured her former roommate, Patti LuPone, with whom she lived during Plaza’s Broadway debut in Danny and the Deep Blue Sea.

Despite their close, playful bond, this was the first time they had to act professionally together. Plaza described their relationship as one of “troublemakers,” highlighting how they love creating silly bits and characters together.

She and I love doing dumb bits and stupid characters, we’re both, like,
troublemakers.
