The first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash has finally arrived, and it gives fans a wild look at what’s next in James Cameron’s massive sci-fi world.

The trailer began playing in theaters before The Fantastic Four: First Steps, but now 20th Century Studios has released it online for everyone to see. This is the third film in the Avatar series and is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025.

Right away, the trailer sets the tone. We hear Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, speaking to Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldaña. “You can’t live like this baby — in hate!” he says. The story continues from where Avatar: The Way of Water left off, and things are far from peaceful.

The Na’vi are still at war, but now there’s a new clan in the mix—the Ash People. Unlike the friendly Na’vi clans we’ve seen before, the Ash People are clearly not on the same side.

The humans, led by a clone of Colonel Quaritch, are still a major threat too. He’s back and just as aggressive, continuing the fight against Pandora’s native population. Jake and Neytiri’s kids are once again caught in the chaos. Spider, their human ally, also seems to be getting into more trouble.

Oona Chaplin plays a new character named Varang, the Ash Queen, and she makes a strong impression. In the trailer, she tells Sigourney Weaver’s Kiri, “Your goddess has no dominion here.” That line says a lot about the Ash People’s beliefs and their role in the conflict.

Other returning cast members include Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, and Kate Winslet. According to reports, Cameron co-wrote the script with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, and they worked with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno on the story.

Production on this film wasn’t easy. It started filming way back in 2017 in New Zealand. It was shot at the same time as The Way of Water, and the process took over three years. One big reason for the delay was the underwater motion capture scenes, something that had never been done before at this level.

James Cameron had to wait for the right technology to exist so he could shoot it the way he wanted.

Even the release date has moved around a lot. The film has been delayed nine times, with the most recent date change happening in August 2024. Right now, it’s locked in for a December 2025 release. Two more sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are already in the works. They’re expected to arrive in 2029 and 2031.

James Cameron had talked about making sequels all the way back in 2006, before the first movie even came out.

After the massive success of Avatar in 2009, he made it clear he was building a much bigger world. When The Way of Water came out in 2022, it made over $2.3 billion worldwide. Combined with the first film, the Avatar franchise has made more than $5.2 billion so far.

With Fire and Ash, Cameron is pushing the story into darker, more intense territory. This isn’t just another trip to Pandora, it’s a war story, a family drama, and a cultural clash all at once. From what the trailer shows, the Ash People will change everything we thought we knew about the Na’vi. And once again, the Sully family will be right in the middle of the fight.
