Do you remember Avatar? Yeah, that epic sci-fi movie featuring blue aliens written and directed by James Cameron. And do you remember there are also sequels on the way? Yeah, not one, but four sequels. No? Well, let us jog your memory.

Avatar, the highest-grossing movie of all time was released back in 2009 and it was the revolution of modern cinema. The movie grossed over $2.7 billion, surpassing Cameron’s Titanic as the highest-grossing movie of all time. That spot was taken by Avengers Endgame in summer 2019, but Avatar got it back after another re-release in China last year.

James Cameron has been working on the sequel for the past decade. Avatar 2 was initially set to be released in 2014 (LOL), and it was pushed back several times then. Right now, Avatar 2 is set to be released in December 2022, and let’s hope that date is final. And they say that GTA fans are waiting too long for the next installment.

Producer Jon Landau now revealed the first details about the plot of the long-awaited sequels.

When you get to the reef, there’s a clan we call the Metkayina. The Sullys are no longer in the environment that they know, the rainforest. They become the fish out of water. They become the fish out of water both culturally and just environmentally.

“The scripts are the blueprint from which we work. So a large portion of our time was writing… with the challenge that each of those four scripts had to individually resolve itself in a story that concludes with a big emotional resolution – but when you look at them as a whole, the connected story arc of all four movies creates an even larger epic saga.”

“I think the story of Avatar 2, and the strength of the story, is what Jim [Cameron] always does in any of his movies: he writes in universal themes that are bigger than any one genre. And if you think about this, there’s really no more universal theme than family. At the center of each of our sequels is the Sully family. What are the dynamics that parents go through to protect their family?”

Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 were filmed back-to-back. The production started in 2017, and it wrapped in late 2020 after more than three years of shooting. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, and Matt Gerald are all returning to reprise their roles from the original movie, while Sigourney Weaver will also return in a different role. Returning stars will be joined by newcomers; Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, and CJ Jones.

Directed by James Cameron, Avatar 2 is set to be released on December 16, 2022. Avatar 3 will be released on December 20, 2024. Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are also in development, with release dates set on December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028, respectively.
