20th Century Studios has announced that James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water will return to theaters for a limited run. The studio confirmed that the Oscar-winning film will be re-released in 3D worldwide for one week starting October 3.

Along with the announcement, a new trailer and poster were released to give fans a taste of the return to Pandora.

The movie first came out in 2022 and quickly became one of the biggest films of all time. It earned over $2.3 billion at the global box office, making it the third highest-grossing movie in history.

It also won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and was nominated in several other categories, including Best Picture.

Set more than ten years after the events of the first Avatar, the sequel focuses on the Sully family—Jake, Neytiri, and their children.

The film follows their struggles as they fight to protect each other, deal with constant danger, and face devastating losses. Much of the action takes place in Pandora’s oceans, where audiences are introduced to new Na’vi clans and incredible sea life.

Cameron and producer Jon Landau led the project through their company Lightstorm Entertainment in partnership with 20th Century Studios.

The cast includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, and Kate Winslet. Newer faces like Britain Dalton, Jamie Flatters, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Bailey Bass, and Jack Champion also joined the story as the next generation of characters.

The script was written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who also helped craft the story with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. David Valdes and Richard Baneham are listed as executive producers.

The official description from 20th Century Studios says the re-release will let audiences “reach new heights and explore undiscovered depths” as Cameron’s world returns to theaters in 3D. The short engagement is meant to give fans another chance to experience the film’s groundbreaking visual effects in their intended format.
