‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Doctor Doom Funko Pop Reveals a New Look at Marvel’s Big Villain
Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is already one of the biggest talking points around ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and now fans have another early look at the character. A new Funko Pop figure based on Downey’s version of Doom has been revealed, giving collectors a better idea of the costume and overall design Marvel is using for the upcoming Avengers movie.
The figure is scheduled to go on sale October 4, well before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on December 18. It shows Doom wearing his familiar metal mask and dark green cloak, while also carrying a weapon that appears to fit the character’s high-tech side. While it is still only a collectible figure, merchandise like this can sometimes reveal details about a movie long before audiences see them on screen.
The new figure also shows how important Doctor Doom has become to Marvel’s marketing for the movie. Since Robert Downey Jr. was announced as the actor behind the villain, Marvel has slowly revealed more about the character without giving away too much of the actual story. The Funko Pop is now another part of that rollout, giving fans something they can study while they wait for more official footage.
The information about the new figure comes from its merchandise release details and the wider ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ promotional rollout. Funko collectibles have become a common way for fans to get early looks at major movie characters, especially when studios are keeping full costume reveals and story details under wraps. In this case, the figure gives a clear look at the main colors and basic shape of Downey’s Doom without revealing exactly how the character will look in every scene.
Doom merchandise has already started appearing in other forms. Iron Studios previously showed off several large collectibles connected to the movie at San Diego Comic-Con, including a quarter-scale Doctor Doom figure. Those displays also included versions of Professor X and Magneto, adding even more fuel to fan theories about how the X-Men will fit into the massive crossover.
There are also expected to be more Funko Pops tied to ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Earlier retailer listings have pointed to figures based on characters such as Thor, Mister Fantastic, Magneto, Cyclops, Gambit, Shang-Chi, Namor, and Yelena Belova. The growing merchandise lineup reflects just how many heroes and villains are expected to share the screen when the movie finally arrives.
Doom himself is expected to be at the center of the story. In the movie’s setup, he is a powerful ruler of Latveria from an alternate Earth who sees himself as the person capable of saving reality from a massive multiversal disaster. That makes him different from a villain who simply wants to destroy everything. Doom believes his actions are necessary, which could make his conflict with the heroes much more complicated.
Downey’s return to the Marvel world has made that idea even more interesting. He spent years playing Tony Stark before his story ended in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ so seeing him return as Doctor Doom gives the character an unusual connection to the MCU. Marvel has not revealed exactly how the movie will handle that connection, leaving fans to guess how much of Downey’s previous MCU history will matter.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito among the producers. The movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters and IMAX on December 18, while ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is set to follow on December 17, 2027. With the Doom Funko Pop arriving in October, fans will have another piece of the movie to collect and analyze long before the next big official reveal.
For now, the figure offers a simple but useful preview of what Marvel is planning for its next major villain. Whether Doctor Doom’s final movie design looks exactly like the collectible remains to be seen, but the combination of the metal mask, dark cloak and weapon already gives fans plenty to talk about as the countdown to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ continues.
