‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Gets an Early Release as Disney Moves Up the Date

After years of delays, reshuffles, and a full creative reset, the ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ release date is finally coming into sharp focus. The Russo brothers’ multiversal epic, which brings Robert Downey Jr. back to the MCU as Victor Von Doom, has been locked in for December 18 as part of Phase Six.

Getting there wasn’t simple. In May 2025, Disney pushed the film back from its original May 1, 2026 slot, with a source saying the new schedule was meant to give filmmakers more time on some of the biggest movies the studio has ever made. Marvel had already reworked the saga after dropping Jonathan Majors as its main villain, turning the project into a Doctor Doom story.

Now British audiences are getting a small but exciting bonus. Disney has confirmed that the film’s UK release is moving up from December 18 to December 16, giving fans across the country a 2-day head start on the rest of the world, as Empire reported after Disney confirmed the date to Digital Spy.

The news spread fast, with Empire’s post about the change passing 404.5K views and 7.3K likes on X. One fan responded with a GIF of Hulk happily throwing his arms wide, which pretty much summed up the mood.

There were already hints this was coming. About a week earlier, fans spotted that UK chain Cineworld was listing December 16 as the standard release date, while a US advance screening was also posted for December 16 at 7:30 p.m. at a Regency theater in Granada Hills, California.

An early UK launch isn’t exactly unprecedented for Marvel. Empire noted that both ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ reached UK cinemas a day or two before their wider international rollouts.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ followed a similar pattern this year, opening in Britain a couple of days before the US and Canada. That film went on to break records domestically, opening to $360 million.

The shift also comes with a crowded December calendar. Empire pointed out that ‘Dune: Part Three’ is now getting preview screenings from December 15, meaning the much-hyped “Dunesday” clash is no longer confined to a single December 18 drop.

The earlier Doomsday date gives British moviegoers more room to space out 2 massive blockbusters. Or, as Empire joked, it gives fans the chance to squeeze in extra trips to Latveria and Arrakis before the ultimate geeky double bill.

Anticipation is running high. TheWrap reported that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has already racked up more than $50 million in presales and could challenge the domestic opening record set by ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’.

Marvel is also warming fans up with ‘Avengers: Endgame: Encore’, arriving September 25 with special footage and an extended runtime for IMAX and Infinity Vision screenings. The re-release includes a sneak peek at ‘Doomsday’, making it a natural lead-in to December’s main event.

Filming took place from April to September 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England, with location work in England and Bahrain. The screenplay comes from Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, with Alan Silvestri composing the score.

The cast is enormous, mixing MCU regulars like Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova with actors from 20th Century Fox’s ‘X-Men’ films through the idea of colliding universes. The story will then continue in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, which is set for December 17, 2027.
