‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Has Secret Avengers Nobody Has Announced Yet, and Alan Cumming Just Confirmed It
Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has been generating relentless buzz since its announcement, and with good reason. Directed by the Russo brothers, who previously delivered ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, the film is set to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, with its companion feature ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ following a year later. Even before a proper trailer has landed, the project has already established itself as the biggest event film Marvel has attempted since the Infinity Saga.
One of the more surprising figures returning to this generational crossover is Alan Cumming, who will reprise his role as Kurt Wagner alongside Patrick Stewart, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, and Kelsey Grammer from the original Fox ‘X-Men’ films. Cumming, who first originated the blue-skinned teleporting mutant Nightcrawler in 2003’s ‘X2: X-Men United’, has openly described the new production as a far more positive experience, calling it “really healing” after the miserable circumstances he endured the first time around. His candor throughout the promotional cycle has already made him one of the most talked-about figures connected to the film.
That candor went one step further recently when Cumming sat down with Deadline, revealing that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is still hiding returning characters that have not been publicly announced. He explained that Marvel used fake names in the scripts during production, specifically to prevent the identity of certain returning heroes from leaking ahead of time, adding that the sheer number of characters involved made the whole process genuinely overwhelming. He summed up the experience by calling the film “superhero soup,” a description that is as funny as it is telling about the scale of what the Russo brothers have assembled.
Those comments have sent fan speculation into overdrive, since they confirm that what audiences have seen announced publicly is far from the complete picture of who will appear in the film. The confirmed roster already spans the ‘Fantastic Four’, the Thunderbolts lineup, key figures from Wakanda, and a host of classic Avengers, with Robert Downey Jr. returning not as Iron Man but as the iconic villain Doctor Doom.
Still conspicuously absent from any official confirmation are names like Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, among others. Given that Cumming has now confirmed Marvel was actively disguising certain characters inside the script itself, any of those figures could easily be among the surprises the studio has been working to protect.
Cumming has previously described filming in near-total isolation, with green screen work, face replacement technology, and character aliases used to keep even the cast from knowing exactly who they were working opposite. Based on leaks and circulating rumors, names like Deadpool, Wolverine, and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man are considered strong possibilities, though industry insiders have also suggested Marvel has surprises in store that no one in the scooper community has yet reported on.
A first trailer is widely expected to surface by late May or mid-June, which should begin peeling back some of the mystery surrounding the film’s true scope. Until then, Cumming’s remarks are a genuine confirmation that the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ roster goes deeper than anyone outside the production currently knows. Which hidden character do you think Marvel has been protecting the most carefully behind a fake name in that script?
