‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Reveals an Extended Version of Ant-Man’s Captain America Joke

The Captain America mantle has had a complicated journey in the MCU. Steve Rogers handed the shield to Sam Wilson at the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, but the road to Sam embracing the title wasn’t smooth. Along the way, Wyatt Russell’s John Walker briefly carried the name in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ before Sam took over the mantle, with Walker later becoming U.S. Agent.

Now all 3 men are set to share the screen in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers, Anthony Mackie leads his own team as Sam Wilson, and Walker arrives as part of the New Avengers, the team formerly known as the Thunderbolts. That’s a lot of Caps in one room.

Marvel has already been having fun with that awkwardness. In a recent trailer, Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang tries to wrap up a planning scene by asking whether everything is settled and addressing Steve Rogers as “Cap.” He then glances at Sam, the current Captain America, and quickly corrects himself.

Now an extended version of that joke has been revealed, and it turns a quick gag into a fuller exchange. As shared by DiscussingFilm, the 7-second clip shows Scott mid-conversation with Walker, who delivers the punchline: “I was also Cap for a minute.”

The extended beat gives the scene a perfect button. Rather than leaving the confusion between Steve and Sam, Walker throws himself into the mix, reminding everyone that he too once held the title.

The humor lands because of the history behind it. Fans have watched the shield change hands across multiple films and shows, and this moment acknowledges that tangled lineage in a single line.

It may also serve a bigger purpose. Some fans have worried that Evans’ return could overshadow Sam, and one analysis argues the joke helps defuse that concern by having Ant-Man voice the audience’s own awkwardness. Reports suggest Sam still has a meaningful role leading his own team of Avengers.

There’s even a fun layer for Russell himself. The actor’s first audition was for the title role in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, a part that ultimately went to Evans. Walker’s arc has evolved significantly over the years. After debuting in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, he joined the misfit group in ‘Thunderbolts*’, which ended up rebranding as the New Avengers. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will be his third MCU project.

Russell has teased that each appearance offers a new side of the character. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he suggested the Walker audiences meet in ‘Doomsday’ will be completely different again from his previous versions.

The extended clip is part of a wave of new promotion. Marvel recently released a TV spot featuring Thor urging the heroes to team up and stand together, along with footage of Steve Rogers wielding Mjolnir. A World Series preview also took fans to the Fantastic Four’s Earth-828.

With heroes from 3 universes colliding, moments of levity like this one help balance the stakes. Marvel seems keen to remind audiences that even in a world-ending crisis, the Avengers haven’t lost their sense of humor. Fans can see the full exchange and how the 3 Captains navigate working together when ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on December 18.
