‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Star Patrick Stewart Finally Shuts Down Retirement Rumors For Good
Patrick Stewart has spent more than six decades moving between stage and screen, and few actors carry quite as much goodwill into a comic book franchise as he does. His return as Professor Charles Xavier in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has been one of the more emotional threads of Marvel’s massive ensemble buildup, if only because fans have long treated it as a possible final bow. That framing has followed the film for months now, long before its cast even finished filling out.
The story traces back to November 2025, when YouTuber Kristian Harloff claimed on his show that Stewart would be “done with acting” and “stepping down” once filming wrapped on ‘Doomsday’. The claim spread from there, with outlets reporting that Stewart intended his role in the film to be his final acting performance. Notably, neither Stewart nor his representatives ever confirmed any of it, yet the rumor kept resurfacing anyway, most recently again this week with fans reacting as though it were brand new information.
This time, though, Stewart addressed it himself. Speaking with TV Insider for TV Guide Magazine’s Star Trek, The Captains special issue, he was asked directly whether ‘Doomsday’ marks the beginning of him stepping away from the industry. His response, shared during that interview with TV Insider, put the speculation to rest in blunt terms, saying “I can’t imagine ever officially retiring. I’ll always and forever be an actor.”
Rather than framing himself as finished, Stewart described simply becoming more selective as fewer roles come his way with age. He pointed to a recent voice part in Riz Ahmed’s series ‘Bait’ as proof he still chases work that excites him. It is a far cry from the “stepping down” narrative that had circulated since last fall.
Anyone who has followed Stewart’s relationship with Professor X could have seen this coming. He said much the same thing about being finished with the character back in 2017 after ‘Logan’, only to return for a cameo in 2022’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’. Treating any single ‘Doomsday’ appearance as some kind of career finale was arguably premature from the start, given that pattern.
For now, what is confirmed is that Stewart reprises Xavier alongside Ian McKellen’s Magneto in a sprawling cast that folds the original X-Men into the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU as Doctor Doom, with Anthony and Joe Russo directing the film for its December 18 release.
