Ever since Robert Downey Jr. tore off a green mask in Hall H, one question has hung over ‘Avengers: Doomsday’: can his Doctor Doom actually deliver? The Russo brothers’ film arrives on December 18 carrying enormous expectations, with record-breaking presales and a stacked ensemble of Avengers, Fantastic Four members and legacy X-Men characters.

Marvel has kept most of the story tightly under wraps, so fans have been piecing together clues from trailers, promos and insider chatter. Test screenings, in particular, have become a closely watched source of early buzz in recent weeks.

Now a new round of details has surfaced from those screenings. According to insider Daniel Richtman, as shared by MCU Film News, early reactions to the film are positive, and Doctor Doom is reportedly considered one of Marvel’s best villains, on par with Thanos.

The report also claims the runtime is around 2 hours and 50 minutes, that James Marsden’s Cyclops is a standout, and that there is currently 1 important post-credits scene. As with any insider claims, none of these details have been confirmed by Marvel.

This isn’t the first encouraging report. Richtman previously claimed the film had held 3 test screenings, with reactions described as good, and teased that the opening 10 minutes would give audiences heart attacks.

One September screening reportedly drew around 80 people, including Marvel team members and partner studio staff, who watched the full film with the post-credits scene and then voted on it.

Other insiders have been similarly upbeat. Jeff Sneider of The InSneider recently reported a test screening reaction calling the film way better than expected, while scooper MyTimeToShineHello claimed one screening scored higher than ‘Avengers: Endgame’. That last claim remains unverified.

The reported 2 hours and 50 minutes fits a long-running story, though it’s slightly longer than other figures. The Hollywood Reporter put the working runtime at 165 minutes about 5 months before release, and AMC currently lists that same 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Test cuts can change, so any screening runtime should be treated as a snapshot rather than a final number. Anthony Russo has also previously described the movie as roughly 2 and a half hours.

The post-credits scene has its own intriguing backstory. Marvel reportedly shot a new tag scene a little over 3 months before release, and it screened in unfinished form during a September test screening.

That fits Marvel’s broader strategy of teasing Doom wherever it can. The recent ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ re-release added new scenes tied to ‘Doomsday’, including one where Doom tells Bruce Banner he has come to collect him.

The Cyclops praise is notable for fans eager to see the X-Men share the screen with the Avengers. Several Fox-era X-Men characters officially cross over in the film, including Professor Xavier, Magneto, Mystique, Cyclops, and Gambit, suggesting the movie is finding room to give legacy heroes meaningful moments.

Test screenings come with caveats. These are internal showings; the details come from industry scoopers rather than official channels, and some reports describe reactions only vaguely. Still, if Doom truly lands on Thanos’ level, Marvel may finally have the villain it needs to carry the Multiverse Saga home.

Do you think Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom can rival Thanos as one of Marvel’s greatest villains?
