‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Has $10M+ in Pre-Sales, but One Tracker Spots a Warning Sign

Few re-releases arrive with as much baggage as ‘Avengers: Endgame‘. The 2019 film sits as the second-highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide, trailing ‘Avatar’ by a shrinking margin. Now Disney is sending it back to theaters as ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ on Sept. 25, with a few extra minutes of footage connecting it to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.

The early signs were strong. When tickets went on sale in late August, the re-release reportedly posted the biggest first-day pre-sales this century for a theatrical re-release, topping the mark set by the 2012 3D return of ‘Titanic’. That made it look like more than a nostalgia lap.

Now a fresh pre-sales update is adding some nuance. On Sept. 20, X user @Itsjat32 posted that ‘Endgame Encore’ has passed $10 million in pre-sales in North America, saying the sales are great and should lead to a $40-50 million-plus weekend. But he also warned that momentum has been kind of dead for the last week or so and needs to pick up for the film to clear a $25 million opening.

That $25 million line matters because of the record on the table. Global Box Office has the film tracking for a $22 million to $27 million domestic opening, which could beat the $25.6 million debut of ‘Titanic 3D’ as the biggest opening weekend ever for a re-release. Other forecasts are more cautious, with one published prediction landing at $19.6 million, and a wider range of domestic projections running from $19 million to $28 million.

The replies in the screenshot are split. One user expects plenty of chatter through the week and a decent walk-up, while another blames limited screen availability, pointing to new releases and holdovers taking the maximum screens. A third reply asked whether the $40-50 million figure was meant to be a worldwide number, a fair question given how the post sets it beside a smaller domestic benchmark.

Overseas, the picture looks much brighter. In China, box office analyst Luiz Fernando reported that pre-sales for the Sept. 24 to 27 period hit $965,000 after just 2 days, and reporting has since put the total at $1.4 million for the opening weekend. That already beats the opening-weekend pre-sales of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and ‘Dune: Part 2’ in the market, and trackers are talking about a possible $50 million China debut.

The global stakes are higher still. Estimates suggest the re-release would need roughly $124.3 million more worldwide to leapfrog ‘Avatar’ again, and a global opening weekend north of $60 million is being floated. The re-release is also designed to build anticipation for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which has reportedly logged more than $50 million in advance ticket sales at the 100-day mark before its December release.

So the question isn’t whether ‘Endgame Encore’ will sell tickets, but how big it will get in North America. If the walk-up business shows up during the final week, the record is within reach, while a quieter week could leave it just short. Either way, a 7-year-old blockbuster is still making box office headlines.
