‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Is Conquering the Global Box Office All Over Again

Re-releases usually arrive as quiet nostalgia plays, but the ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ box office run is proving that Marvel’s biggest event film still has serious muscle. 7 years after it first shattered records, the Russo brothers’ blockbuster is back in theaters and dominating headlines once more.

The original run set an almost untouchable bar. ‘Endgame’ launched in April 2019 to a record-setting opening weekend of $1.2 billion globally, eventually settling into the No. 2 spot on the all-time worldwide chart. The new version adds a modified ending and new post-credit scenes to set up ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which hits theaters on December 18.

The domestic numbers already made history. Returning to 3,060 North American screens, the re-release earned around $11.2 million on Friday, including Thursday previews, and is expected to open at No. 1 with $26 million. That put it ahead of Robert Pattinson’s ‘Primetime’ and Brad Pitt’s ‘Heart of the Beast’.

For context, that result is rare territory. Re-releases rarely earn more than $10 million, and only the ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Lion King 3D’ re-releases have done this kind of business. By comparison, the 2022 re-release of ‘Avatar’ opened with just $10.5 million domestically and earned $76 million worldwide.

The international picture is where things get truly eye-popping. According to box office tracker Jatinder Singh, the re-release earned $18M+ overseas on Saturday alone, bringing its overseas cume to $46M+, with the international weekend headed for $60M+. He projects a global weekend of $85M+ for the re-release.

Those figures stack on top of an already massive foundation. Singh noted that adding the Encore haul to the original run of $2.812B puts the film on track to near a $2.9B cume. He capped his update with a fitting nod to Captain America’s famous line, simply writing “On your left…”

The domestic total is climbing too. The weekend is expected to bring the film’s lifetime domestic gross to $884 million and put it within $100 million of the all-time global record held by ‘Avatar’.

Part of the appeal is the added footage. The re-release includes 4 minutes of extra footage designed to build anticipation for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, and it’s playing on premium large-format screens in over 1,300 locations. Disney is also including an exclusive look at ‘Doomsday’ footage.

Analysts saw the potential ahead of time. BoxOfficeReport.com’s Daniel Garris pointed to the current hype around ‘Doomsday’ and the many showtimes in higher-priced PLF formats as reasons it could open above last year’s ‘Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith’ reissue.

Still, there are limits to how far it can run. Re-releases tend to be heavily frontloaded, since they target hardcore fans who typically show up during opening weekend.

That hasn’t stopped fans from dreaming big. One reply under Singh’s post expressed hope that audiences worldwide keep the film in theaters for a month, like China, arguing that doing so could keep a small chance alive of reaching $3B.

Whether or not that happens, the Encore has already delivered what Marvel needed. The re-release’s early reports paint a promising picture for the MCU as it heads toward ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ at the end of the year. With the franchise’s biggest event film back on top and fans lining up again, the countdown to December suddenly feels a lot louder.
