‘Avengers Endgame: Encore’ Presales Near $15M, Setting up a Record-Breaking Re-Release Weekend

Movie theaters have learned that the right re-release can feel like a brand-new event, and ‘Avengers: Endgame: Encore‘ is shaping up to prove it once again. Last year, the 20th anniversary re-release of ‘Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith’ earned an estimated $25.2 million domestically and $42.2 million worldwide, landing No. 2 at the box office in a limited 1-week engagement.

That set a high bar for Marvel. Disney noted at the time that the ‘Revenge of the Sith’ weekend ranked among the top re-release openings in domestic history, trailing only the 1997 Special Edition of ‘Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope’ at $36 million and the 2011 3D release of ‘The Lion King’ at $30 million.

Now ‘Endgame’ looks ready to join that elite company. According to box office tracker Itsjat32, whose post was widely shared on Reddit’s r/boxoffice, the Encore has racked up nearly $15 million in North American presales, which the tracker called the highest ever for a re-release, surpassing ‘Revenge of the Sith’.

The tracker added that the weekend should land at $25 million or more, with the potential to reach $30 million. It’s worth noting that presale comparisons can be tricky, as outlets reported the ‘Revenge of the Sith’ presale picture differently last year, with ComicBookMovie citing $20 million in presales while other reports used that figure as a projected weekend total.

The latest numbers line up closely with wider industry expectations. Earlier this week, TheWrap reported that trackers and exhibition sources expect at least $25 million domestically, with a good chance of clearing $30 million, while Variety’s estimates sit between $25 million and $28 million.

If the higher end holds, ‘Endgame’ would move past ‘Revenge of the Sith’ and even challenge ‘The Lion King’ for one of the biggest re-release weekends ever. Anything north of $36 million would put it in record territory, even by Disney’s own ranking.

Unlike a standard anniversary screening, Marvel is packaging the Encore as a special event. The re-release features 4 minutes of bonus footage, a new post-credits scene, updated color grading, and a 185-minute runtime.

It also offers an exclusive sneak peek at ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which arrives December 18 with Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom. That added incentive may explain why so many fans are buying tickets early, even for a movie they’ve likely seen many times.

The excitement isn’t limited to North America. In Indonesia, the Encore pulled in 131,692 admissions on its first day, helping ‘Endgame’ reclaim the country’s all-time admissions record. Presales in China reached $965,000 after 2 days, outpacing comparable totals for ‘The Batman’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’.

That global push matters because ‘Endgame’ still trails ‘Avatar’ as the highest-grossing film ever. The gap stands at $124.3 million, according to Box Office Mojo figures cited by SuperHeroHype, meaning a strong domestic weekend alone won’t be enough to take back the crown.

The Encore opens on September 25 against tough competition. Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ is targeting $24 million to $26 million in its second weekend, while newcomers ‘Heart of the Beast’, ‘Forgotten Island’, and ‘Primetime’ are each projected to earn between $15 million and $20 million.

If presales translate into walk-up business as expected, ‘Endgame’ has a real shot at winning the weekend and setting a new modern benchmark for how big a re-release can be.
