‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Quietly Changed One Line, and Fans Think It Explains Everything About ‘Doomsday’

Marvel’s theatrical return of ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ has already drawn attention for its new Doomsday-bridging footage, refreshed color grading, and the debut of Disney’s Infinity Vision format. Beneath all of that, though, fans have zeroed in on something far smaller than a new scene or a premium screen certification: a single word quietly swapped into one of the film’s most iconic lines.

In the original 2019 cut, Tony Stark tells Steve Rogers, “You mess with time, it tends to mess back,” delivering the line right after Thanos and his army arrive in the present-day timeline. According to GamesRadar, the newly released ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ trailer changes that same line to, “You mess with time, time tends to mess back,” replacing the pronoun “it” with a direct repetition of the word “time” itself.

That single-word swap has been enough to spark real debate among fans about whether Marvel is quietly rewriting one of ‘Endgame’s’ most quoted lines to set up the mechanics of ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ A viral post from user VishalSid comparing the two versions side by side has racked up widespread attention, framing the change with the simple question: “THEY CHANGED THE DIALOGUE??”

According to ComicBook.com, the altered line plays right before a shot of Steve Rogers standing on the time platform preparing to return the Infinity Stones, a moment widely believed to connect directly to the choice that eventually leads Steve to stay in the past and build a life with Peggy Carter. That decision has become central to fan theories about how the Incursions driving ‘Doomsday’s’ multiversal conflict actually began.

The Direct went even further in its own breakdown of the change, suggesting Stark may have “inadvertently foreshadowed how Steve Rogers’ journey back in time will lead to an Incursion and Doctor Doom’s quest for vengeance, hence ‘[messin’] back.'” That outlet also noted that some comparison posts circulating online had been edited to exaggerate the differences between the two trailers, but confirmed the actual dialogue change itself is real and intentional on Marvel’s part.

This isn’t the first time this exact line has drawn scrutiny. According to Popverse’s coverage of Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the original Encore trailer shown to fans back in July already leaned heavily on this same piece of dialogue, paired with Steve’s stone-return journey, well before the swapped wording had even been confirmed publicly. Reporter Erik Voss, live at the panel, noted the trailer’s heavy emphasis on the line at the time.

That early emphasis suggests Marvel has been building toward this moment for months rather than making a last-minute tweak. With Steve Rogers never explicitly confirmed dead the way Tony Stark was, and with Chris Evans reportedly returning for ‘Doomsday’ in some capacity, fans increasingly believe the studio is using Encore to finally clarify what actually happened to Steve after he chose to stay behind.

It’s worth noting that ‘Endgame Encore’ has been officially described as a re-release rather than an extended cut, meaning most of the film’s runtime, dialogue included, remains intact beyond a handful of deliberate tweaks tied to its new Doomsday-facing footage. Marvel Studios has not directly addressed the specific meaning behind the altered line, leaving the theory as fan speculation for now, even if a genuinely compelling one.

With ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ opening in theaters September 25 and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ following on December 18, fans won’t have to wait too much longer to see whether this small wording change actually pays off as the setup so many are already convinced it is.
