Avengers: Kang Dynasty Plot – What It Could Be About (& Comics It Could Follow)

While we are in the middle of the San Diego Comic Con 2022, it is difficult to avoid thinking about any future Marvel projects because of the fact that Comic Con has always been known for providing us with news regarding the future of the MCU. However, thanks to a leak, there is a good possibility that we are going to see two Avengers movies quite possibly in Phase Five of the MCU’s slate. One such movie could be Avengers: Kang Dynasty. So, what could Avengers: Kang Dynasty be about?

Avengers: Kang Dynasty could follow the events of the Kang Dynasty, which is a 16-part Avengers comic book series that details the war between Kang and the Avengers. The story follows the destruction of the UN and the death of the entire Washington DC population in Kang’s quest to conquer Earth.

At this point, this is merely speculation on our part because nothing has been confirmed by Marvel Studios. The title of this Avengers movie is just a leak, and that means that it might not have been filed by Marvel Studios for the purposes of producing an Avengers movie. Nevertheless, let’s talk about what we know about what Kang Dynasty could be all about.

Who Is Kang In The MCU?

One of the things that we know about the Marvel Comics universe is the fact that the Avengers have faced a lot of opponents throughout the existence of the group. Of course, while Thanos has always been one of the constants in Marvel history, another foe has long been one of the enemies that the Avengers have faced countless times in the comics. We are talking about Kang the Conqueror.

In the comics, Kang the Conqueror is a man that came from the 30th century and was able to find a way to control time and travel back to the 21st century in the hopes of conquering it. There have been a lot of different stories written about Kang in the comics but what we do know is that he has always been one of the enemies that the Avengers have dealt with in the decades-long history of the group.

Of course, we were able to meet Kang the Conqueror quite early in the MCU, but in the form of another character. Back in the events of the Loki series, we were made to see that there used to be only one single timeline called the Sacred Timeline that the Time Variance Authority, a group that exists well beyond the confines of space and time, tries to keep in check. That means that there used to be only one universe in the entire Marvel continuity and that the TVA is responsible for removing all of the different variants in the different timelines and resetting the timelines so that they could make sure that the Sacred Timeline is being followed.

However, Sylvie, a female Loki variant from another timeline, wanted to take revenge on the man who controls the TVA because she was taken away from her own timeline beyond her will. As such, she and Loki journeyed all the way to a different plane of existence, where they met someone named He Who Remains, who is the one who has been secretly controlling the TVA.

He Who Remains revealed to Loki and Sylvie that there once existed multiple timelines and universes. However, one of the variants of the characters tried to take over all of the entire universes, and that was what led to a war between all of them. He Who Remains was literally the only one who remained as he took on that name and created the TVA so that only one timeline could be followed and that the birth of his evil variant could be avoided.

However, Sylvie ended up killing He Who Remains, and this led to the birth of the multiverse as the Sacred Timeline began splitting into infinite numbers of universes throughout the vast and unending multiverse.

That said, it was later revealed that He Who Remains is a variant of Kang the Conqueror, considering that Jonathan Majors, the one who plays He Who Remains, is also set to play the role of Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. In that regard, the speculation is that He Who Remains was the survivor of a large war between all of the different Kang variants and that he is trying to avoid the timeline from splitting up to give birth to the universe wherein Kang the Conqueror exists.

What Could Avengers: Kang Dynasty Be About?

The fact that Kang the Conqueror will be playing a big role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania should be a big opening for what could happen in one of the next Avengers movies, which could be Kang Dynasty.

Although there are leaks regarding the plot of Quantumania and that Kang will end up getting trapped in the Quantum Realm, it is more than possible that Kang will eventually find a way to become a universal or even a multiversal threat to the Avengers.

However, at this point, there hasn’t been any word from Marvel Studios regarding what kind of a threat Kang could be in the future. But, thanks to a leak from intellectual properties filed at the European Union Intellectual Property Office, we could be seeing Kang in an Avengers movie entitled Kang Dynasty. So, what could Avengers: Kang Dynasty be about?

For starters, Kang Dynasty is actually the title of an Avengers comic book series that ran for 16 parts from 2001 to 2002. The comic book follows the story of how Kang the Conqueror and his son, Marcus, traveled all the way from the 30th century to the 21st century in the hopes of conquering the planet.

In the comic book series, Kang destroyed the UN building and annihilated the entire population of Washington DC to prove a point. However, the Avengers were there to find a way to stop him from conquering the planet. Despite that, Kang still found a way to escape after his defeat.

While it could be possible that Avengers: Kang Dynasty will follow the story of the comic book series, the thing that needs to be understood is the fact that most of the characters in the Kang Dynasty comic book storyline are either yet to be introduced or are already gone. For example, Tony Stark, Vision, and Steve Rogers played crucial roles in the fight against Kang, but we all know that they are already gone in the MCU.

Of course, Kang is yet to be introduced as the Conqueror and not as He Who Remains, but e we do know that he is going to be introduced in Quantumania. Of course, the Scarlet Centurion, who is Kang’s son named Marcus, is also a key character in Kang Dynasty.

As such, it might be impossible for the MCU version of Kang Dynasty to replicate the comic book storyline. That means that changes have to be made to the storyline, just like how there were plenty of changes in the other Avengers storylines that were taken from the comics. After all, the MCU is looking to become its own entity instead of a comic book adaptation.

In that regard, we might see the current and surviving Avengers fighting Kang the Conqueror and his forces in what could be a multiverse-level event that He Who Remains wanted to avoid when he created the TVA and made sure that there was only one single timeline.

When Will We See Avengers: Kang Dynasty?

At this point, it might be possible that Avengers: Kang Dynasty will be the sixth Avengers movie in the MCU slate and will be the Avengers movie of Phase Five. That’s because there are still a lot of things that could happen between now and the events that will eventually lead to Kang becoming the big bad of the MCU.

he who remains

Thanos is a good example because it took three phases for him to eventually rise up to become the huge threat that the Avengers needed to defeat. The buildup for him was done so well that hardly any questions remained to be asked when he finally stepped into the plate as the big baddie during the events of Avengers: Infinity War.

In that regard, we do know that Kang will be introduced in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania but not as someone who the Avengers are going to face. This could serve as the preliminary introduction of the character before the MCU builds him up in the next Phase Four movies until the end of the current phase. And that could mean that Phase Five could be dedicated to the eventual rise of Kang as a multiversal threat.

Upcoming Marvel Movies: The Complete List

As such, there is a good possibility that it would take at least four more years for us to see Avengers: Kang Dynasty due to the fact that there are still a lot of other movies on the MCU slate. For one, Quantumania is set for a release in the middle of 2023, and that could mean that the Avengers-level movie of Phase Four could happen late in 2023 or early in 2024.

After that, there would still be more years for Phase Five to build up its events until the next Avengers-level movie is ready. That could take a long time, and that means that the next decade for the MCU is going to be quite full. We are looking at a possible 2026 to 2028 release for Avengers: Kang Dynasty, depending on how fast the next phase develops.
