‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Production Start Reportedly Slips Again
Marvel’s plan for its next big Avengers duology borrows from a familiar playbook. The studio wants to release ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ exactly one year apart, mirroring the ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ era. The idea is to treat them as one massive story, but the schedule is getting harder to hold.
The first film, ‘Doomsday’, arrives on December 18, 2026, with Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom and the Russo brothers directing. Filming for it ran from April to September 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England, with location work in England and Bahrain. The sequel, based on the studio’s current schedule, lands on December 17, 2027, which would conclude the Multiverse Saga.
Now the production timeline for that sequel is reportedly moving yet again. The Hollywood Handle, citing scooper DanielRPK, says ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is now eyeing a February 2027 production start date, even though it’s still listed to release in December 2027. A fan replying to the post predicted the film is obviously delayed, a sentiment that has been echoed in coverage around the report.
This isn’t the first adjustment. ‘Secret Wars’ was originally expected to begin filming in mid-2026, with April floated near the end of 2025, and later reports moved the target to August and then early October. DanielRPK then said filming would be delayed until November, Apocalyptic Horseman suggested January instead, and DanielRPK later agreed that January 2027 was right.

SlashFilm reported earlier this month that the delay is linked to the Russos, who are deep in post-production on ‘Doomsday’ as they work to meet its release date. The outlet said its own sources confirmed that the January information was legitimate, but Disney hasn’t confirmed any of it. A February start would be the latest in a series of slips, and Marvel hasn’t announced a production date.
The key question is whether the release date can hold. A January start would leave less than a year to shoot, edit, and finish the film, and a February start shrinks the window even further. Forbes noted that earlier reports of a late April or May wrap would leave only seven to eight months for post-production on what is expected to be the studio’s most effects-heavy project.

Marvel’s own history with the film’s date adds context. ‘Secret Wars’ was first set for May 1, 2026, then moved to May 7, 2027, and finally to its current December 2027 slot in May 2025. Reports at the time said the shifts were driven by the increased scope of both films, and the studio chose to avoid scheduling any other releases in between.
For now, the studio’s public position hasn’t changed. Marvel’s official page still lists December 17, 2027, and according to DanielRPK, Marvel and the Russos still insist on holding that date. Other reports describe no hint of a release move yet, which means the discussion remains speculation rather than a confirmed delay.

The stakes are high because ‘Secret Wars’ is the only Marvel film currently scheduled for 2027. If it doesn’t arrive on time, the studio could go more than a year without a theatrical release, which Forbes called a real accounting concern. That pressure explains why the calendar is getting so much attention.
It’s also worth remembering that the two films weren’t shot back-to-back, which adds to the logistical challenge. Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely are among the writers, and Downey is the only cast member Marvel has publicly confirmed for ‘Secret Wars’ so far.

Until Marvel or Disney says otherwise, the picture remains a mix of scooper reports and official dates. Whatever happens, the next few months, especially the reception for ‘Doomsday’, will likely shape what comes next.
Do you think Avengers: Secret Wars will make its scheduled December 17, 2027 release date?
