‘Baby Reindeer’ Star Jessica Gunning, 40, Reveals She’s Never Had a Relationship

“I’ve never been in a relationship before with anyone,” she said. “Everyone around me was gay. I just didn’t think I could be.”

Gunning explained that her sexuality played a big role in this. She came out as gay in 2022 and said that before that, she avoided dating altogether.

“Well, not to get too deep, but it was probably that I didn’t want to go out with guys and so I was finding a way to avoid it,” she shared. “I never knew how to flirt, I didn’t get it. I was always friends with guys and would set them up with other friends. In a way it was, like, ‘Great, because I’m not interested.’”

She also spoke about how her confidence affected her when it came to relationships. Gunning said her feelings about her body may have played a part in why she stayed away from dating.

“It might be connected to size, maybe because I was bigger,” she said. “It’s hard to word this because I don’t want it to seem like I’m saying it in a negative way, because it definitely isn’t. I didn’t feel like an alien in a negative way, but it was, like, an otherness.”

While her personal life has been quiet, her career is moving fast. Gunning is set to play Cass Elliot in an upcoming biopic, a role many fans are excited about. She also has several new projects lined up, including an adaptation of The Magic Faraway Tree and another film titled Sunny Dancer.

Gunning’s story shows a different side of fame. She has reached big success in her career while still figuring out parts of her personal life.
