Both ‘Bad Moms’ Movies in Order: A Christmas Must-Watch

Share:

When it comes to raunchy, wild comedy flicks, hardly any film series pops to mind before ‘Bad Moms.’ It’s a series revolving around three mothers who, under the constant pressures of modern-day life and motherhood, decide to embrace their wild side and indulge themselves in the ‘finer things’ in life, such as wild parties and absolute mischief.

So far, two ‘Bad Moms’ movies came out, and both were huge box office hits despite split reviews. An additional movie and a series have been announced, too, and as Christmas time approaches, this fun series is a must-watch for parents and non-parents due to the relatable yet wild humor. Without further ado, let’s dive into the list.

‘Bad Moms’ movies in order by release date

There are only two ‘Bad Moms’ movies released so far, although a third one was announced a few years ago and was never officially canceled. Nevertheless, the two films that were actually released were huge box office hits, and are now a must-watch for many during Christmas time. They are as follows:

  1. ‘Bad Moms’ (2016)
  2. ‘A Bad Moms Christmas’ (2017)

Both movies revolve around the same three mothers – Amy, Carla, and Kiki – played by Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn, and Kristen Bell, respectively. In the second film, their mothers named Ruth, Isis, and Sandy, played by Christine Baranski, Susan Sarandon, and Cheryl Hines, respectively, join them with high expectations for Christmas.

In the following subheadings, we’ll explain how these movies are connected, what the best way to watch them is, and discuss reports about potential new movies and shows in the franchise. That being said, bear in mind that minor spoilers are possible over the rest of the article.

Are ‘Bad Moms’ movies connected? What’s the best way to watch them?

The ‘Bad Moms’ movies are, in fact, connected to one another, seeing that they revolve around the same group of characters portrayed by the same actresses. The two raunchy comedies are sequels and share a similar sense of humor – with the second film being even wilder than the first one.

The best way to watch these movies is certainly by their release order for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the storylines don’t really overlap that much, and you could potentially watch these films as stand-alone stories unrelated to one another.

However, if you skip the first film and jump right into the sequel, you’ll miss out on some references and character development done in the first film, so you might not get the full experience when watching, even though the storylines and the plots aren’t necessarily deeply connected to each other.

If you’ve already seen the films, or just want a quirky, raunchy Christmas comedy, it’s perfectly fine to go ahead and watch ‘A Bad Moms Christmas’ without (re)visiting the first film.

‘Bad Moms’ movies in chronological order

The chronological order of events within the ‘Bad Moms’ series is the same as the release order. ‘A Bad Moms Christmas’ happens after the events of the first film chronologically.

Therefore, some character development points, relationships, and references that are done and explained in the first aren’t explained again in the second film, which is why you should probably watch both in their release order.

However, as far as the individual storylines go, they aren’t too related to each other, with the exception of the few references I’ve mentioned before.

Where to watch the ‘Bad Moms’ movies?

Both ‘Bad Moms’ movies are available for streaming on Netflix – however, not in every country, so whether or not you’ll be able to find it on the platform depends on your location.

The first movie can also be found for streaming on DIRECTV, TNT, TBS, and tru TV, while you can buy/rent the film on AppleTV, Amazon Video, Vudu, Microsoft Store, Google Play Movies, Spectrum on Demand, and AMC on Demand.

The second movie is streaming on FuboTV, while you can buy/rent it on Amazon Video, Vudu, Apple TV, Microsoft Store, DIRECTV, and Spectrum on Demand.

Will there be more ‘Bad Moms’ movies?

It is actually unclear whether or not there will be more ‘Bad Moms’ movies in the future. A spinoff film titled ‘Bad Moms’ Moms’ was announced all the way back in 2019 – first reported by Variety. The movie was announced at the 2019 CinemaCon and was supposed to revolve around Ruth, Isis, and Sandy – the three grandmother characters introduced in ‘A Bad Moms Christmas.’

However, since its announcements, the movie never really went into development despite never being officially canceled. Therefore, it is still possible that it will get done at some point in the future.

Not only that – we could get many, many more ‘Bad Moms’ films – that is if some of the early ideas from the creators come to fruition. After the first movie was released and the second one announced, the directors, Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, talked to CinemaBlend and revealed that they’d be willing to do ten of these movies without hesitation:

There’s a lot of discussion at the studio about what the next steps are going to be, but I just want to echo what Jon was saying, which is that we may end up being involved with Bad Dads. We may not.

But our focus right now is to get Bad Moms 2 off the ground. We think that those characters are so… there’s such good chemistry with them, we think we could do 10 movies with them and it would be fun.

Jon Lucas then added:

We want to go full ‘Police Academy’ where we are on, like, Number 9 or 10 and still trying out how to make this funny.

Now, these words came in 2016 – yes, 2016 – and still, we only had one sequel, and one announced sequel that hasn’t gone into production in over four years. But, it seems that, before we get any additional ‘Bad Moms’ movies, we could be in for a TV show.

According to reports from Collider, Lionsgate announced the development of a TV series based on the ‘Bad Moms’ franchise as a part of a new deal between Lionsgate and STXfilms – the company behind ‘Bad Moms.’

It hasn’t yet been officially announced, nor were any details about the plot revealed – including whether or not the show will feature the same characters we met and loved in the films.

Long story short, as things stand, a ‘Bad Moms’ TV show is much more likely to happen than a third film, but we’ll just have to wait and see. For now, let’s get rowdy for Christmas and dive into the two movies we have so far!
