Alan Cumming, the host of this year’s BAFTA Film Awards, has officially addressed the controversy surrounding the ceremony, labeling the event a trauma-triggering debacle. His comments come in the wake of an incident involving a Tourette’s campaigner whose involuntary vocal tics included a racial slur while two Black actors were presenting on stage.

Taking to Instagram to express his regret, Cumming offered a sincere apology to those affected by the broadcast. He stated that he was so sorry for all the pain Black people have felt hearing the word echoed around the world and expressed similar sorrow for the Tourette’s community.

According to Cumming, the situation highlighted a widespread lack of understanding and tolerance regarding the condition. He also criticized the organizational response, suggesting that everyone involved was let down by decisions made to both broadcast slurs and censor free speech.

The offensive language was clearly audible during the BBC’s broadcast, which aired on a two-hour delay on February 22. This lapse has prompted the corporation’s executive complaints unit to launch a formal investigation into how the footage was approved for air.

Reflecting on the fallout, Cumming noted that the only positive outcome would be a reminder that words matter. He cautioned against rushing to judgment about things that we are not fully cognisant of and emphasized that all trauma should be recognised and honoured.

He also took a moment to acknowledge the winners and nominees of the evening, offering congratulations to the artists whose work was overshadowed by the night’s events. The ceremony has since been scrubbed from the BBC iPlayer service as the network continues to apologize for the oversight.

The incident occurred while Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage to present a category. The BBC has since admitted that broadcasting the slur was a serious mistake and revealed that a second instance of offensive language was successfully edited out before airing.

Lindo later shared his perspective on the evening, noting that while he and Jordan did what we had to do to finish their presentation, he felt a lack of support following the segment. He expressed a wish that someone from Bafta speak to us afterward to address the immediate shock of the moment.

The campaigner involved, Paul Davidson, has also spoken out, suggesting that the broadcaster should have worked harder to prevent anything that I said from reaching a television audience. BAFTA has issued its own statement, promising to address the harm this has caused and to review its live event protocols.

Alan Cumming remains a highly active figure in the entertainment industry beyond his hosting duties. He is currently enjoying significant success as the host of the U.S. version of the reality competition The Traitors, which has recently been renewed for a fourth season following record-breaking viewership.

BAFTA has indicated that for future ceremonies, it will implement more rigorous monitoring of the delayed broadcast feed. The organization remains under pressure from both advocacy groups and the general public to ensure that such a lapse in editorial judgment does not recur during high-profile cultural events.
