DC’s animated ‘Batman: Knightfall’ trilogy is heading into its second chapter, and Warner Bros. is raising the stakes for the sequel, ‘Knightquest’. The three-film saga adapts the 1990s ‘Knightfall’ comic storyline and leans into an R rating, giving one of Batman’s most famous comic arcs its first full adaptation.

The first chapter debuted at San Diego Comic-Con before arriving digitally on August 25 and on physical media on September 8. It was well received for staying close to the original comic storyline and its 1990s look, which set high expectations for what comes next.

Now fans have their first real taste of the sequel. As DiscussingFilm shared, the first clip from ‘Batman: Knightfall Part 2’ has arrived via IGN, and the movie is set for release on December 15.

The nearly 2-minute clip features Nightwing in a dark blue suit with gold detailing, riding a motorcycle through Gotham. Comics Beat previously noted that Dick Grayson, the former Robin now known as Nightwing, appears in the sequel’s trailer to help a city in crisis.

Supervising producer Rick Morales has said he was excited to bring Nightwing into the story in a real way. He also praised the character’s relationship with Tim Drake’s Robin, which he described as an older brother and younger brother dynamic.

The story picks up after Bane has left Batman broken. With Bruce Wayne paralyzed from the waist down and no longer able to protect Gotham, Jean-Paul Valley, also known as Azrael, takes on the mantle of the Dark Knight.

The big question is whether his more violent methods can stop Bane. Warner Bros. teased the shift with the line “Batman has fallen, and a new Dark Knight must rise,” and the sequel’s motion poster shows Azrael badly outmatched in a fight with Bane.

Producer Jim Krieg has said the part he’s most excited about is Bruce’s relationship with Dr. Shondra Kinsolving, which he also called heartbreaking. He added that the team made a few changes to the story for efficiency.

Anson Mount returns as Batman, with Michael Mando as Bane and Pablo Schreiber as Azrael. Jack Griffo voices Tim Drake’s Robin, Bruce Boxleitner plays Commissioner Jim Gordon, and Simon Templeman is Alfred Pennyworth.

The wider cast includes Toks Olagundoye as Dr. Shondra Kinsolving, Jessica Camacho as Renee Montoya, and David Dastmalchian as the Riddler. Jason Flemyng plays the Mad Hatter, Mick Wingert is Harvey Bullock, and Andrew Morgado voices Victor Zsasz.

Jeff Bennett plays the Ventriloquist and Scarface, Luis Bermudez is Catman, and Max Mittelman voices Jason Todd’s Robin. Fans can also expect other classic villains, including Two-Face, who appeared in the trailer.

Jeff Wamester directs the sequel, with Jeremy Adams credited as writer. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is releasing the film on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray, and pre-orders are already open.

The 4K release features a Dolby Vision and HDR presentation along with 2 featurettes, ‘Azrael Batman: The Next Knight’ and ‘Knightfall: To Kill… Or Not to Kill’. Both look set to dig into the moral divide between Bruce Wayne and his far more brutal replacement.

The final chapter of the trilogy is expected in early 2027. Morales has suggested that fans of Jean-Paul Valley will be happy with what the remaining films have in store, which means Azrael’s time under the cowl is far from over. For now, the Nightwing clip gives fans an early look at how the sequel will widen Gotham’s cast as the city faces Bane without its original protector.
