Fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty will get one final chance to visit Cousins Beach. Amazon Prime Video announced that the popular YA romance series will conclude with a movie.

The news came during the show’s finale red carpet event in Paris, France. Details about the plot are still under wraps, but the film will be directed by series creator and author Jenny Han, who is writing it alongside Sarah Kucserka.

The series finale, which dropped on Prime Video on Wednesday, finally revealed who Belly (Lola Tung) chooses between Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). Following the storyline of Han’s books, Belly ends up with Conrad.

The Summer I Turned Pretty has been a major hit for Amazon. Courtenay Valenti, head of film, streaming, and theatrical at Amazon MGM Studios, and Vernon Sanders, Global Head of Television at Prime Video, said, “The Summer I Turned Pretty has struck a chord with audiences everywhere, creating moments of joy, nostalgia, and connection that have made it a global sensation.”

“We’re proud of the series’ extraordinary success and couldn’t be more excited to partner again with Jenny Han to bring fans an unforgettable next chapter.”

Jenny Han added, “There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due. I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans.”

The series first premiered on June 17, 2022, and was quickly renewed for a second season before it even debuted. The second season came out in July 2023, followed by the 11-episode third and final season in July. The show has received generally positive reviews.

The first season has an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the third season holds an 83% rating. Critics praised Lola Tung’s performance as Belly and the show’s ability to capture the challenges of growing up and navigating first love.

Throughout its run, the series was lauded for its coming-of-age storytelling. Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter called it, “a cut above…sensitive to the subtle but irreversible shifts in self-perception that come with late adolescence.” Delia Cai of Vanity Fair noted that the show’s charm comes from the specificity of Laurel’s summer world, which makes it feel authentic.

The second season tackled heavier themes like grief and loss, with critics highlighting Belly’s emotional growth. Some noted that the season was a bit slower and more serious than the first, but Tung’s performance remained a standout.

This final movie promises to wrap up Belly’s story in a way that the series could not. With Jenny Han at the helm, fans can expect a faithful and heartfelt conclusion to the beloved series.

Ending the series with a movie is a smart move. It allows the story to have a bigger, more cinematic conclusion that gives fans closure. Fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty will finally see Belly’s journey fully realized on the big screen. What do you think about wrapping up the series with a film instead of another season?
