Ben Affleck Reveals Why Jennifer Garner Won’t Be His On-Screen Wife in ‘Animals’

Casting a movie can sometimes feel like a game of musical chairs, and the road to Ben Affleck’s ‘Animals’ has had more than its share of shuffling. The crime thriller has been through pauses, delays, and multiple lead actors before finally landing at Netflix. Even now, new details about how the cast came together keep surfacing.

The film is directed and co-written by Affleck alongside Connor O. McIntyre and Billy Ray. It follows Los Angeles mayoral candidate Mark Kimball, whose son is kidnapped, leaving him and his wife, Abigail, with a few hours to come up with the ransom money. The movie will play in select theaters and debut on Netflix on October 9.

Now Affleck has explained why his ex-wife Jennifer Garner, once part of the project, isn’t in it. Variety reported that Affleck wanted to cast Garner as the leading lady until a scheduling conflict meant he would have to step into the role opposite her. According to the report, Garner felt that pairing would bring audience baggage.

The original version of ‘Animals’ looked very different. According to Deadline, Matt Damon was set to star as Mark Kimball, with Garner initially cast as Mark’s wife Abigail. Gillian Anderson and Steven Yeun were also attached at that stage.

Then came a surprising obstacle. Two weeks before production, Affleck learned that Spike Lee and Denzel Washington were making ‘Highest 2 Lowest’, another thriller built around a kidnapping, and worried audiences would see the projects as competing versions of a similar idea. He discussed it with Damon and the producers before shutting the production down.

Months later, Affleck’s passion for the project reignited the production, but Damon was busy working with Christopher Nolan on ‘The Odyssey’. Affleck decided to play Mark himself, which turned Garner’s role into that of his on-screen wife. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he joked that Damon chose a smaller director, film, and role, and predicted he would regret it.

That is where the complication began. Affleck considered the upside of working with Garner again, including the chance for both of them to spend more time with their kids by coordinating their schedules. But Garner quickly saw the problem with playing a married couple opposite her ex-husband, and the pair decided against it.

The tone of Affleck’s comments is warm rather than awkward. He described Garner as fabulous and a really good friend, said he is profoundly grateful to her, and said he would still like to work with her in the future. His concern was that the audience’s baggage could end up working against the movie.

The two have shared the screen before, in ‘Pearl Harbor’ and 2003’s ‘Daredevil’, where Affleck played Matt Murdock, and Garner played Elektra Natchios. They divorced in 2018 after 10 years of marriage and share 3 children. Garner has also praised Affleck as an incredible co-parent in a July interview with Entertainment Weekly.

The role of Abigail ultimately went to Kerry Washington. Affleck described her as polished but warm, according to a report from Syracuse.com, and said he thought she was amazing for the part. The cast also includes Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, Luis Gerardo Méndez and Adriana Paz.

The story behind the casting is a fascinating look at how much outside noise can shape a movie before it ever reaches audiences. For a thriller about a family under pressure, the real-life history between its star and one potential co-star could have overshadowed everything on screen. Affleck and Garner seem to have decided that keeping the focus on the story was worth more than the headlines.
