‘BioShock’ Director Admits Netflix’s Shake-Ups Are Making the Long-Awaited Movie Harder to Crack

Few video games have earned the kind of reverence that the original ‘BioShock’ has since launching in 2007, still regarded as one of the greatest narrative-driven games of all time. Its drowned city of Rapture, its Big Daddies and its twisty moral questions have lingered in pop culture for nearly two decades. Hollywood has circled the property for just as long.

The most serious attempt has come from Netflix. The streamer first announced the movie in 2022, but updates have been scarce, leaving fans unsure whether it would ever escape development hell. In 2024, producer Roy Lee revealed at San Diego Comic-Con that the project’s scope had changed, with a “new regime” at Netflix lowering budgets and a much smaller, more personal version now planned.

Now director Francis Lawrence has offered another candid check-in, and it is a mix of optimism and frustration. Reacting to the film’s status, Lawrence said, “It is a tough nut to crack that world and that story … you are the character when you play the game, and so creating that character from scratch into that world … that is pretty batshit in a most amazing way. It’s tricky … [but] we’re getting close.”

He was just as frank about the situation at the studio. “Netflix right now has had regime changes and just all of that kind of nonsense that I don’t like to have to deal with … So we’ll see. Hopefully we’ll figure it out,” Lawrence added, in comments first reported by The Direct.

The “regime changes” he mentions are real. Dan Lin has taken over from Scott Stuber as Netflix’s head of film since the movie was first announced. That kind of leadership turnover can shift priorities, budgets and greenlights on a project that was already complicated.

The adaptation challenge Lawrence describes is also a fair one. The game’s hook is that the player is the protagonist, which is hard to translate into a traditional movie with a defined lead. That may be why the script has taken so long to settle.

There has been some forward motion, though. Lawrence previously told IGN that the movie is still in development and that screenwriter Justin Rhodes has joined the project and delivered a new draft. Lee has also said that the film is definitely going to be based on the first ‘BioShock’ game, which means the story will follow Jack, the unlucky survivor who ends up in the underwater city of Rapture.

Lawrence’s schedule has been part of the delay too. Development had to pause while he completed ‘The Long Walk’ and moved into production on ‘Sunrise on the Reaping,’ which was shooting in Spain for a November 2026 release. With that film’s release now only weeks away, his attention could soon swing back to Rapture.

Timing may matter for another reason. Lee has said that Netflix and Take-Two are anxious to see the movie come out because they want its release to coincide with potential new incarnations of the game. Meanwhile, the fourth game in the series is in early development at Cloud Chamber, with that entry rumored to boast a polar setting.

Fans have good reason to feel both excited and nervous. Netflix has been on a video game adaptation push, and one critic wrote that the worlds in games like ‘BioShock’ and ‘Gears of War’ are so massive and detailed that translating them to live-action could be tough. Lawrence seems to share that concern, and his “we’re getting close” is a cautious sign of progress rather than a promise.

For now, there is still no release date and no casting news. Whether the movie finally surfaces will depend on how steady Netflix’s leadership proves to be, and on whether Lawrence can solve a puzzle that has stumped Hollywood for years.
