‘Black Panther’ Star Chadwick Boseman’s Estate Battle Deepens as Newly Revealed Letters Show Family Questioned His Final Days

Nearly 6 years after his death, the Chadwick Boseman estate dispute is pulling back the curtain on a painful rift inside the late actor’s family. The ‘Black Panther’ star died on August 28, 2020, at age 43, after a private 4-year battle with colon cancer, and he did not leave a will.

Weeks later, his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, filed a probate case in Los Angeles asking to be named administrator of his estate with limited authority. The court documents, which also listed his parents, Leroy and Carolyn Boseman, placed the estate’s value at $938,500 at the time.

The conflict escalated this summer. In July, E! News reported that Boseman’s brothers, Kevin and Derrick, filed a petition asking the court to compel Ledward to distribute the estate and remove her as its administrator. They claimed rights tied to the actor are managed by Chadwick Boseman, Inc., a company they say Ledward controls, and argued that her handling of the estate creates the appearance that she is concealing assets.

According to court documents cited by People, Boseman’s parents are reportedly entitled to 25% of the estate, while Ledward is entitled to 50%. The Richest reports the estate at the center of the current petition is now valued at $3.8 million.

Now, newly revealed correspondence shows the tension began much earlier. According to TMZ, which obtained the letters, lawyers for Boseman’s parents and brothers wrote to Ledward’s legal team on November 16, 2020, just weeks after his death.

The letter asked her team to release Boseman’s medical records, preserve data by digitally imaging his phones, computers, and other devices, and provide an accounting for his bank accounts. It also raised questions about the opioid levels detected in the actor’s system at the time of his death, per The Richest’s summary of the documents.

Ledward’s lawyer responded sharply on December 1, 2020. “With regard to the content and tenor of your letter, the sudden misguided and aggressive nature of your correspondence is both a disappointment to my client and requires now an entirely different posture,” the attorney wrote, according to TMZ.

The Richest reports that the response also noted Ledward had tried to include the brothers in projects honoring her late husband’s legacy. Her lawyer vowed to protect her from what he called bogus and avaricious claims, saying the family had forced the situation to proceed by the book.

A second letter from the brothers’ lawyers, dated August 23, 2021, raised further questions about the circumstances of Boseman’s death, including why he was found on the floor of his bedroom. The family had wanted an autopsy, though Ledward initially did not, reportedly feeling his body had been through enough.

It’s important to note that these letters reflect questions raised during a legal dispute, not findings of wrongdoing. No official conclusion suggesting anything improper about Boseman’s death has been reported.

The TMZ story drew many replies focused on the reality of end-stage cancer care. One user shared that her mother died of colon cancer and relied on morphine in her final week, arguing that opioids are a necessary part of that care, while another reply expressed confusion about the family’s concerns.

The dispute comes as Boseman’s legacy remains front and center. Marvel recently cast David Jonsson as T’Challa’s son in ‘Black Panther 3’, and Derrick Boseman publicly embraced the choice, saying T’Challa needs to live on as a positive influence for young Black children.

Ledward, meanwhile, famously accepted Boseman’s posthumous Golden Globe on his behalf, delivering an emotional speech about what he would have said. With the court battle still ongoing, the family’s private grief continues to play out in public.
