Otoribashi was seemingly killed twice, then zombified, but thanks to Mayuri – he is now alive and well
Rose was promoted to the rank of Captain about a year before Kisuke Urahara. His Lieutenant at the time was Chikane Iba, the mother of Tetsuzaemon Iba. About 110 years before the present timeline, Otoribashi was sent with some other members of the Gotei 13 to investigate the disappearance of Kensei Muguruma. After devising a plan with Lisa to overpower Kensei, he was surprised by Mashiro Kuna, who, like Kensei, had turned into a Hollow. Shortly after Mashiro hurt Rose, he saw Kensei attacking Lisa and told him to stop because he wasn’t such a weakling to attack women.
After that, Rose and everyone else who was sent out, except Shinji Hirako, were defeated by Kaname Tōsen, and then Hollowfied themselves until Kisuke Urahara and Tessai Tsukabishi showed up and took them to the 12th Division’s lab and attempted to reverse the Hollowfication by using of the Hougyoku, but this failed, although he managed to stabilize them. After being brought into the real world by Kisuke Urahara and Yoruichi Shihōin, he stayed in Karakura Town with the other Viored.
He dwelled with the Visored in Karakura, living in hiding at the time and then, later, helping Ichigo train with his friends. He was among the Visored who fought Ichigo’s Hollowfied form to help him master it.
He first reappears in Fake Karakura Town with the other Visoreds when Aizen, Gin, and Tosen broke out of Yamamoto’s Fire Prison. When Shinji inquired if any of them want to talk to someone from the Gotei 13, Rose said no. After Shinji came back from his conversation with Yamamoto, Hooleer spits out a large amount of Menos. Otoribashi and the others put on their masks to prepare for battle.
He and the others are ready to fight Gillian and draw their swords. Rose uses his special ability, which causes a melody to emanate from his Zanpakuto, causing a sort of transparent band to wrap around Gillian, which tightens the closer he gets and then crushes him.
He continues by discussing the spiritual tie that forms between those who band together to confront a shared foe and how this bond is not always bad because it is a natural instinct of all living things. However, Love hits him in the head before he can finish speaking, prompting Rose to inquire why he did it. Love responds that the conversation is over and that he should concentrate on the now.
They both now see Coyote Starrk, and Love comments that he looks pretty strong. Starrk then asks them if they are sure to take off the masks. Love starts grinning and says they are superheroes, so their masks last only three minutes. Whether that’s true or not isn’t entirely clear, as Love uses his mask again as the fight begins. Meanwhile, Rose seems to just be watching the fight until Love later pulls him from a pile of rubble.
After Starrk ‘summoned’ his wolf pack, Rose uses his Shikai to counter the wolves. However, his Shikai passes through the wolves, causing Love to assume the wolves are like flames. Rose uses Kinshara Sōkyoku Dai Jūichiban – Izayoi Bara, which also has no effect. An explosion then hits both at close range.
After Starrk is defeated, Rose and Love go to Shunsui; however, Rose only listens to the two talking. A little while later, Rose is seen with the other able-bodied Shinigami and Visored, who want to protect Ichigo from Aizen and his Shikai. After Shinji iterates that the most important thing is to protect Ichigo and that it’s not just his, it’s everyone else’s fight, Rose, along with Lisa, Shinji, and Love, attack Aizen.
When Komamura was defeated, Rose intervened with his Shinaki. Aizen simply caught it, pulls it towards him along with Rose, and severely injured Rose. After Ichigo defeats Aizen and the fight was over, Rose is seen with the other Visoreds in Fake Karakura Town. Unohana took good care of his and the others’ wounds. He looks shocked when he hears that despite everyone, she still sees the Visoreds as friends and allies.
A while after Aizen was defeated, Rose, Shinji, and Kensei were given permission to return to Soul Society. It stands to reason that the other Visords were also allowed to return, but they didn’t want to. As a result, all three of them have resumed their old status as Captains. He is present among the Captains, except for Kurotsuchi and Ukitake, when Ichigo comes to Soul Society to get Kūgo Ginjō’s body to bury in the World of the Living.
During Wandenreich’s first attack on the Seireitei, Rose faced NaNaNa Najahkoop. When he heard that Kira and three other Shinigami from his company had died, Rose only had more incentive to defeat his opponent. How the fight went or ended was not shown. However, NaNaNa seemed to have either escaped or won, as he was later seen with Yamamoto and Yhwach. We assume that he later trained to hone his skills, and after Urahara secured their Bankai, he and Muguruma arrived to face Mask De Masculine after he had defeated Hisagi, Ikkaku, and Yumichika.
Initially, Rose only watched Kensei’s battle, but when Mask seemingly killed the latter, he activated his Shikai and killed James, only to then activate his Bankai and severely injure Mask. However, he made the fatal mistake of revealing his Bankai’s mechanism to Mask, who burst his eardrums when he found out that Rose’s Bankai created illusions using music. Mask then used his attack and pierced Rose’s torso, but Rose was still alive and was later taken to Isane by Rukia. Isane managed to stabilize him and Muguruma, but they were seemingly killed by Gremmy Thoumeaux, who attacked Isane and Yachiru.
While Gremmy was fighting Kenpachi, Giselle Gewelle found Rose and Kensei and turned them into zombies, later using them to fight Mayuri. Luckily for the two of them, Mayuri anticipated this and first freed them of Giselle’s control and then recovered them using his inventions.
Rose was later seen in the “No Breaths from Hell” one-shot, proving that he has recovered and is alive and well.
