Netflix’s ‘Blue Eye Samurai’ quickly became one of the streamer’s most acclaimed animated series. The Emmy-winning adult animated drama premiered on November 3, 2023, and followed Mizu, a mixed-race swordmaster on a ruthless quest for revenge.

Fans have been waiting a long time for more. Season 2 was first announced for January 2027 at Anime NYC in August, even though the creators had originally hoped to release it this year.

Netflix marked the series’ anniversary with fresh footage. As DiscussingFilm shared, a new teaser for ‘Blue Eye Samurai’ Season 2 has arrived, confirming that the new episodes will drop on Netflix on January 19.

The teaser shows Mizu facing a group of armed fighters silhouetted against a blazing sky. In one line, she asks for an ember’s light to brighten a path to the men she seeks, a clear nod to the hunt at the center of the new season.

The new season moves the action to England. Mizu arrives in London to hunt the 2 remaining men who might be her father, and Netflix’s logline says she will face new friends, old foes, and her own demons.

The setting brings a new kind of challenge. Mizu has to navigate London’s dark underbelly within a puritanical society, which creators Amber Noizumi and Michael Green suggest will clash with her mission.

“If you know Mizu, she doesn’t take too kindly to repression, especially if it stands in the way of her revenge,” the creators told Netflix Tudum. They added that for the first time, she will have to confront what it’s like to stand out as Asian in a sea of white faces.

The story won’t stay entirely in England. Back in Japan, Akemi and Taigen must navigate Edo Castle under a dangerous new Shogun. Meanwhile, Ringo searches for a new purpose. The split structure should give the supporting characters plenty of room to grow while Mizu pursues her revenge overseas.

Maya Erskine returns as the voice of Mizu, alongside Brenda Song as Akemi, Darren Barnet as Taigen, and Masi Oka as Ringo. George Takei, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Randall Park and Kenneth Branagh are also part of the cast.

The new season adds 3 new voices. Jonathan Pryce plays Old Violet, Joel Kim Booster voices Priest Ando, and Sherry Cola plays Kuma. Season 2 will have 6 episodes. Netflix has also renewed the series for a third and final season, planned for 2028, which will close out Mizu’s story.

The creators have said they hope to explore the world further through spin-offs. An art book is also planned around the final season’s release. Noizumi and Green created the series and serve as writers and executive producers alongside Erwin Stoff. Jane Wu returns as supervising director and producer, and Blue Spirit is again handling the animation.

The first season won praise for its striking visuals and brutal action. Based on the new teaser, the second season keeps the same cinematic look while expanding its scope. ‘Blue Eye Samurai’ Season 2 premieres on Netflix on January 19. The series is rated TV-MA, so it’s not meant for younger viewers.

With Mizu’s journey now heading toward its end, the new season should set the stage for her final confrontation. Fans will have to wait a little longer to find out whether she finds the men she has been hunting.
