Blumhouse to Adapt ‘Something Is Killing the Children’ as Movie and Animated Series – Here’s What We Know
Blumhouse, the studio known for hits like Black Phone 2 and the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, has secured the rights to adapt the popular comic Something Is Killing the Children.
The property, created by James Tynion IV and artist Werther Dell’Edera, has been attracting Hollywood interest since its 2019 debut.
The comic tells the story of Erica Slaughter, a monster hunter who protects children from creatures that adults cannot see.
She is part of the secretive Order of St. George, a group trained to fight monsters while keeping their existence hidden. The series has earned critical acclaim, with multiple Eisner Awards for Tynion, including Best Writer in 2021, 2022, and 2023, and a tie for Best Continuing Series in 2022.
Blumhouse plans to adapt Something Is Killing the Children both as a live-action film and an adult animated series.
Tynion will be directly involved in the TV version. Shaun Sutton and Ryan Turek will serve as executive producers on the live-action movie, while Tynion and Stephen Christy will produce for Boom! Studios.
Before Blumhouse’s win, Lionsgate and Netflix were also interested in the property. Netflix had previously developed a live-action series with Mike Flanagan, as well as Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, the creators of Dark, but ultimately chose not to move forward at the end of 2024.
CNN reports that Blumhouse moved more aggressively, embracing the story’s idea of children seeing monsters that adults cannot. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the success of recent horror films, like Zach Cregger’s Weapons, helped increase interest in the project.
This deal marks a major step for Something Is Killing the Children, giving fans a chance to see the story brought to life on both the big and small screens.
Blumhouse seems like a perfect fit for this franchise, given their track record in horror and suspense. The simultaneous development of a movie and an animated series could expand the world of the comic in exciting ways. Fans of the series should have plenty to look forward to.
