Bowen Yang Says ‘Wicked 3’ Isn’t Happening: “I Think We Leave It Here”
Bowen Yang believes the “Wicked” film series has reached its conclusion. When asked about the possibility of a third “Wicked” movie, the “Saturday Night Live” star and actor in the series seemed happy with how the latest film, “Wicked: For Good,” wraps up the story.
“I think we leave it here,” Yang told Variety’s Marc Malkin during Variety On the Carpet presented by Lexus. He jokingly added that he might pitch a spinoff featuring his character Pfannee and Bronwyn James’ ShenShen.
“I’m going to pitch a ‘Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead’ story with my and Bronwyn James’ characters.”
“Wicked: For Good” continues from last year’s “Wicked” and adapts the second act of the Broadway musical. Currently, there are no plans for a third film, as the story follows the stage show’s ending.
Director Jon M. Chu also addressed the possibility, saying, “What’s it about? You know, there’s a lot of ideas flying around right now. … We’ll see. Let’s enjoy this ride first.”
Yang also shared his excitement about Ariana Grande returning to “Saturday Night Live” as host in December, with Cher as the musical guest. “I cannot wait. I’m so glad that we have her presence there,” Yang said.
“Ariana definitely has a good Cher impression. We’ve had ‘Christopher Walken Reunion’ [sketch] where everyone has a Cher impression. I’m going to pitch a ‘Cher Family Reunion’ for Christmas time. Everyone has a Cher impression.”
At the New York City premiere of “Wicked: For Good,” both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were present but did not give interviews. Universal representatives explained that Erivo wasn’t feeling well and had lost her voice, and Grande skipped interviews in solidarity with her co-star.
Other cast members attending the premiere included Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Colman Domingo, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. “Wicked: For Good” hits theaters this Friday.
