Brad Pitt’s Global Star Power Throws ‘Heart of the Beast’ a Box Office Lifeline

Few movie stars still move tickets across continents the way Brad Pitt does, and the ‘Heart of the Beast’ international box office debut is proving it in a big way. After a bruising domestic conversation around the film, overseas audiences have delivered a very different story.

The film had plenty to prove heading into release. David Ayer directed the survival thriller, which stars Pitt as a retired veteran navigating a brutal 58-mile trek to safety after he and his trusted combat dog survive a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness. It also reunites Pitt with his ‘Fury’ director for the first time in over a decade.

Stateside, the numbers sparked plenty of hand-wringing. The movie landed at No. 3 with $20 million from 3,435 theaters, which Variety called disappointing given its hefty $82 million price tag. Some online accounts were quick to label it another Paramount bomb.

That narrative shifted once the international figures rolled in. As Exhibitor Relations Co. highlighted, the film earned $30.1M overseas this weekend, with France leading the way at $3.8M and the United Kingdom following at $2.7M. The account summed up the result by crowning Pitt an international superstar.

The global picture looks considerably healthier as a result. The $30.1 million came from 63 markets, bringing the film to a global start of $50.1 million. France’s showing was especially notable, with the film topping that country’s box office ahead of other new releases and holdovers.

Those results blew past expectations. Before the weekend, the film was projected to earn around $15 million internationally for a global debut of roughly $35 million. Instead, the overseas haul came in at about double that estimate.

The international strength is particularly surprising given the film’s themes. Deadline noted that movies with this kind of Americana feel typically make the bulk of their money domestically, pointing to ‘Lone Survivor’, which earned 81% of its $154.8M worldwide haul in the U.S. Still, the outlet reported overseas was coming on strong thanks to the film’s universal themes.

Fans noticed that dynamic too. One reply under the post admitted they assumed the military subplot would only appeal to American audiences, but praised the decision to add a dog into the mix. Another fan simply joked that Pitt had shifted into full ‘F1’ mode.

Even with the international boost, there’s a long way to go. The film reportedly needs to clear more than $200 million worldwide just to break even. Theater owners keep about 50% of ticket sales, so it will rely on staying power and international interest to recoup its costs.

There are encouraging signs on that front. The movie earned a strong A-minus CinemaScore, and the thinking is that adult audiences, who don’t usually rush out opening weekend, will give it some legs. It also arrived with strong reviews after premiering at the San Sebastián International Film Festival earlier this month.

The domestic debut came during an unusually packed frame. The film went head-to-head with ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’, A24’s ‘Primetime’ and ‘Forgotten Island’, limiting how much any single title could dominate. Even its previews showed promise, with the film’s $2M outpacing the $1.5M earned by Pitt’s ‘Ad Astra’.

If overseas momentum holds and word of mouth spreads at home, Paramount’s survival drama could still turn a soft domestic start into a respectable global run. For now, Pitt’s worldwide appeal looks like the film’s strongest weapon.

Do you think Brad Pitt’s international star power can carry Heart of the Beast to profitability?
