For a generation of moviegoers, Rick and Evelyn O’Connell defined big-screen adventure. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz first teamed up in Stephen Sommers’ 1999 film ‘The Mummy’, playing a fearless treasure hunter and a brilliant Egyptologist who accidentally awaken a supernaturally powerful high priest, before reuniting for ‘The Mummy Returns’ in 2001.

The franchise later stumbled with ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’, which shifted the action to China and replaced Weisz with Maria Bello. Now Universal is bringing the original duo back for a fourth film, officially titled ‘The Mummy: Book of the Dead’, which is set for release on October 15, 2027.

Production is well underway on the long-awaited sequel. As Rachel Weisz News shared, Weisz, Fraser and Michael Johnston were spotted filming ‘The Mummy: Book of the Dead’ in new footage circulating online.

The clip, credited to Johnston, offers a glimpse at a bustling market set packed with activity. Colorful umbrellas and fabric canopies shade rows of stalls, while crowds of extras in period dress move through the scene against weathered stone walls.

Although the footage is brief, it captures the kind of vibrant, exotic atmosphere that made the original films so memorable. For longtime fans, it’s an exciting sign that the sequel is embracing the franchise’s classic adventure roots.

Principal photography began on September 7, 2026, in London and Morocco. Earlier set photos showed Fraser filming a vintage vehicle sequence tied to a 1957 speed trials scene in Suffolk, while Weisz was photographed filming outside the British Museum in London.

In early October, production also moved to Blythe House, where onlookers reported seeing a stunt double for Weisz’s Evelyn running down a fire escape. The latest market footage suggests the story will once again take audiences far beyond England.

The film is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a screenplay by David Coggeshall. The project was first reported in development in November 2025, with Fraser and Weisz attached to return.

Reports suggest the new film will serve as a direct sequel to ‘The Mummy Returns’, essentially disregarding the events of ‘Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’. That would allow Weisz to step back into the role of Evelyn after sitting out the third installment.

Fraser and Weisz aren’t the only familiar faces returning. John Hannah is back as Evelyn’s brother Jonathan, Oded Fehr returns as the Medjai warrior Ardeth Bay, and Kevin J. O’Connor reprises his role as Beni.

Arnold Vosloo is also set to return as Imhotep, the titular mummy and undead High Priest of Osiris. The reunion marks the first time Fraser, Weisz and Hannah have shared the screen since ‘The Mummy Returns’, 25 years ago.

Johnston, known for his breakout role in ‘Obsession’, is one of several newcomers joining the franchise. Numan Acar and Tara Emad round out the new additions, though details about their characters remain under wraps.

The full storyline has not been revealed. Still, between the British Museum scenes, the vintage cars and the lively market setting, the sequel appears to be blending period adventure with globe-trotting spectacle in classic ‘Mummy’ fashion.

With filming continuing and a release date set for next fall, anticipation for the revival is building. Fans who grew up with Rick and Evelyn will soon get to see whether the beloved duo still has the magic that made the original films such enduring favorites.
