Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz To Reunite for ‘The Mummy 4’
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are getting ready to return to the world of ancient curses and desert adventures. The two stars from the 1999 hit “The Mummy” are reuniting for another movie in the franchise, according to reports.
The new film, which will be the fourth in the series, is being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo who go by the name Radio Silence.
They’re best known for their work on the horror-comedy “Ready or Not” and for bringing back the “Scream” series in 2022. Universal Pictures, the studio behind the classic monster movies and the original “Mummy” trilogy, has not commented on the project yet, according to Variety.
Brendan Fraser first became an action star with “The Mummy” in 1999. The movie followed his character, Rick O’Connell, a treasure hunter who accidentally brings a cursed Egyptian priest back to life. Rachel Weisz played Evelyn, the smart and curious Egyptologist who helps him survive the chaos. The film was a massive success and turned Fraser into one of Hollywood’s most loved adventure heroes.
He returned for two sequels, “The Mummy Returns” in 2001 and “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” in 2008 — though Weisz only appeared in the second one. Universal tried to restart the franchise in 2017 with Tom Cruise, but that version failed to impress fans or critics. It was meant to launch a shared “Dark Universe” of monster movies, but the plan fell apart after the disappointing box office results.
Fraser has since made a big comeback. After stepping away from the spotlight for several years because of personal struggles and health problems, he returned with his Oscar-winning role in “The Whale” in 2022. Around that time, he told Variety that he’d love to play Rick O’Connell again if the right idea came along. “I don’t know how it would work,” he said then. “But I’d be open to it, if someone came up with the right conceit.”
