Brendan Fraser is finally opening up about The Mummy 4, a film he says he has been waiting two decades to make.

In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Fraser shared that this new installment will be the version of The Mummy he has always wanted to create.

Fraser explained that while he enjoyed working on the first three films in the series, none of them fully matched his vision. “The one I wanted to make was never made,” he told the AP. He reflected on the third movie, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, saying it was an incredible experience to shoot in Shanghai, but it was shaped by outside circumstances.

“The third one was a model of … NBC had the rights to broadcast the Olympics that year. So they put two together and we went to China. Working in Shanghai, an incredible experience. I’m proud of the third one because I think it’s a good standalone movie. We picked up and did what we do with a different crew on deck and gave it our best shot. But the one I wanted to make is forthcoming. And I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want.” He said.

After the third film, there were plans for another installment. Actress Maria Bello had confirmed she would return, and Luke Ford was reportedly signed on for multiple films. However, Universal canceled the project in 2012 and later rebooted the franchise.

Now, a fourth Mummy film is officially in development. Variety reported that Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are set to direct, with David Coggeshall writing the script. Fraser and Rachel Weisz will reprise their roles, bringing back the original stars that fans remember and love.

For Fraser, this new film represents a long-awaited chance to make the story he has imagined for years.
