‘Brothers’ Episode 4 Recap & Ending Explained: How Woody Finally Gets Matthew’s DNA

This ‘Brothers’ episode recap and ending explained looks at “The Band,” the latest chapter in Apple TV’s comedy about fictionalized versions of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. The series follows the pair through their real friendship and the rumor that they could be brothers. The installment arrived on Wednesday, October 7, on Apple TV.

The official synopsis promises that the two leads put their musical talents to the test while Olive’s investigation ramps up. Heading in, Woody had promised Ma Mac he would drop his questions about Matthew’s parentage, though he and his daughter Olive were still plotting a secret DNA test. Trent O’Donnell directed the installment, which was written by Danya Jimenez, Hannah McMechan and Lee Eisenberg.

The ‘Brothers’ Episode Recap Begins With a Campaign Problem

The story opens on a campaign ad that leans heavily on Matthew’s acting career. Gwen shows the promotional video to Matthew, Woody and Ma Mac. Matthew, who wants to be seen as a serious politician, is not keen on a video that sells his movie star looks.

He would rather build his run on the Texan values he inherited from his father, an idea Gwen finds laughable. His wish to campaign on policy rather than stardom puts him at odds with his campaign manager.

The theme of celebrity carries over to his daughter Clara, who is auditioning for the lead in her school’s production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. She wants Matthew to call in a favor, but he insists the McConaugheys do not coast on the family name.

Woody and Matthew Form a Band in Disguise

Clara laughs off the idea that either man could help her musically, which bruises their egos and pushes them into an impromptu partnership. Woody then suggests performing at the coffee shop where Wyatt works, as a lesson about avoiding shortcuts.

Because both men are famous, Woody proposes that they perform in disguise. They arrive in heavy makeup, with Matthew using an Australian accent and Woody a British one. The eclectic music does not win over the crowd.

Shaken by the muted response, they drop the disguises and return as themselves, playing a song they wrote while working on ‘True Detective’. This time the room loves it, and Matthew writes a large check to Clara’s school.

The takeaway is a self aware one, that celebrities fare better when they lean into being celebrities. It is not a good lesson in the reviewer’s eyes, but it suits a show this silly.

Olive’s DNA Search and the Ending Explained

The central question began when Ma Mac told Woody about a relationship with his father, implying that he and Matthew could be half brothers. The coffee shop gig doubles as a way to empty the house so Olive can hunt for a DNA sample. Olive now has a testing kit, but Matthew is so scrupulously clean that she finds no trace of his DNA anywhere in his home.

She phones the testing company’s help line and connects with Brad, played by Jimmy Fowlie. Brad does not solve her problem, but she ends up confiding in him completely.

With Olive feeling defeated, Woody comes through by producing the prosthetic nose the pair used for their disguises. He hands it to her because it holds the DNA samples she needs for a proper test. The nose leaves the two of them closer to the answers they want.

Where the ‘Brothers’ Mystery Goes From Here

Ready Steady Cut describes this as the first installment to play like a conventional sitcom, with the central mystery pushed to the back burner. The outlet argues that the real actors have never settled the rumor, so the show can mostly use it to buy time.

That critic still finds the episode funny, but worries the back half of the season will follow a similar everyday formula. Show Snob enjoys watching the two leads play off each other and likes the light, brisk pace, yet wonders where the story is really going. Forbes, in its review of the series, called it a charming Apple TV comedy.

The season runs weekly until the finale on November 4, and the next installment is titled “Valentine’s Day” and is set for October 14. Do you believe the prosthetic nose will finally prove that Matthew and Woody are brothers, or should ‘Brothers’ keep the answer out of reach and let fans keep debating it in the comments?
