Bruce Willis’ Wife Says He Is Not Aware of His Dementia Calling It a Blessing and a Curse
In a moving update on Bruce Willis’s battle with frontotemporal dementia, his wife Emma Heming Willis shared that the legendary actor remains largely unaware of his own health struggle. During an appearance on the January 28 episode of the podcast Conversations with Cam, Emma explained that the Die Hard icon never truly grasped the nature of his condition.
Emma, 47, noted that there is a certain mercy in this lack of awareness, describing it as both a blessing and a burden. She expressed a sense of relief that Bruce doesn’t realize he is ill, remarking that he never connected the dots regarding the disease.
The specific neurological phenomenon at play is called anosognosia, a condition where the brain is physically unable to recognize its own impairments. For the 70-year-old actor, this means he perceives his current state as his natural baseline rather than a medical decline.
Emma was quick to clarify that this isn’t a case of the actor being in a state of psychological denial. She emphasized that it’s just that their brain is changing as a direct result of the pathology, making it impossible for the person to identify what is happening to them.
The Willis family first went public with his diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in 2023. Unlike more common forms of dementia, FTD specifically targets the brain’s frontal and temporal lobes, often resulting in personality shifts, language difficulties, and motor skill challenges.
Despite the progression of the disease, Emma shared that Bruce is still very much present and maintains a deep connection with his loved ones. She described their current relationship as a constant process of evolution, noting that we have progressed along with him as his needs and abilities shift.
While their interactions have changed, Emma finds beauty in the new ways they communicate. She explained that the way Bruce relates to her and their children is unique, but remains very meaningful despite the absence of traditional dialogue or connection.
Bruce Willis officially retired from his prolific acting career in 2022, shortly after his initial diagnosis of aphasia was announced. His final on-screen appearances were in a series of action films released in 2023, including Assassin and the Detective Knight trilogy, which allowed him to continue working with a supportive crew as his health began to decline.
In August 2025, Emma revealed that Bruce had moved into a specialized second home that provides 24-hour care tailored to his specific needs. This arrangement allows his young daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, to maintain a healthy environment while still spending significant, memory-making time with their father in a setting that supports his safety.
Emma has since become a prominent advocate for the dementia community, releasing her best-selling memoir, The Unexpected Journey, in September 2025. The book has been hailed as an essential roadmap for caregivers, blending her personal story with expert advice on navigating the emotional and logistical hurdles of the disease.
The broader Willis-Moore family, including Bruce’s ex-wife Demi Moore and their three adult daughters, Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah, continue to provide a united front of support. They frequently share glimpses of their “new normal” with fans, focusing on the enduring love and resilience that define their blended family unit.
By speaking openly about the realities of FTD, Emma hopes to validate the experiences of other care partners who face difficult decisions regarding facility care and daily management. She remains committed to using her platform to shine a light on a condition that remains largely misunderstood by the general public.
