‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Actor Passes Away at 54
Nicholas Brendon, best known for playing Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 54.
The news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, which shared a statement from his family. They said he passed away peacefully in his sleep from natural causes. “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years.”
His family also spoke about his life outside acting and his love for art. “In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create.”
They also addressed his past struggles and said he had been working on his health. “While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.”
Brendon became widely known in the late 1990s and early 2000s for his role as Xander, the funny and loyal friend in Buffy. The show ran for seven seasons and became one of the most popular TV series of its time.
Outside of Buffy, he appeared in several films and TV shows. He had a recurring role on Criminal Minds and also starred in the comedy film Psycho Beach Party, which later gained a cult following. He also worked on the short-lived series Kitchen Confidential, based on a book by Anthony Bourdain.

In his personal life, Brendon faced serious health issues. In 2023, he revealed he had suffered a heart attack and was living with a congenital heart defect. He also dealt with cauda equina syndrome, which required multiple surgeries.
He also had public struggles with addiction and mental health. Over the years, he faced legal issues and spoke openly about his problems, even appearing on Dr. Phil to talk about them.
Despite these challenges, people close to him believed he was in a better place in recent years and hopeful about what was ahead.
Brendon was born in Los Angeles in 1971. Before acting, he wanted to become a professional baseball player. He later turned to acting to help manage his stutter, and he became an advocate for others dealing with the same issue.
He is survived by his identical twin brother, Kelly Donovan, who even appeared with him in a few episodes of Buffy.
His family ended their statement by asking for privacy while they grieve and remember his life.
