Paramount Pictures and Skydance are moving forward with a live-action Call of Duty movie, and they have chosen a director.

Peter Berg, known for Deepwater Horizon and Friday Night Lights, will direct the film and co-write the script with Taylor Sheridan.

Sheridan, one of Hollywood’s top writers, recently announced he will move his overall deal to NBCUniversal in 2029. Until then, Paramount Skydance will keep him busy with this high-profile project. His history of action-packed thrillers makes him a natural fit for a story based on the popular first-person shooter video game, according to Variety.

Details about the plot have not been revealed yet, but the Call of Duty franchise is known for its military action and intense combat. Paramount has previously had success adapting video games into films, such as the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, and other games like Super Mario Bros. and Minecraft have also been adapted for the big screen in recent years.

This isn’t the first time a Call of Duty movie has been in the works. In 2015, Activision Blizzard launched a production studio with plans for a live-action cinematic universe. Stefano Sollima was once set to direct and considered casting Tom Hardy and Chris Pine. Joe Robert Cole was later brought in to write a sequel, but filming never began as the project was put on hold and was not a top priority for Activision.

In September, Paramount and Microsoft-owned Activision officially signed a deal to develop, produce, and distribute the live-action film. This move confirms that the Call of Duty movie is back on track after years of delays.
