Callina Liang’s Before-And-After Transformation for ‘Street Fighter’ Has Fans Speechless
Physical transformations for major roles tend to generate buzz, but most of the time audiences only see the finished product on screen, long after the actual work has been done. Every so often, though, a side-by-side comparison surfaces that puts the entire journey into perspective all at once.
That’s exactly what happened this week when fans began circulating a striking pair of photos showing Callina Liang at two very different points in her career. The contrast between them has quickly become one of the more talked-about transformation stories in recent memory.
The first image shows Liang at the January 2025 New York premiere of ‘Presence,’ Steven Soderbergh’s psychological horror thriller distributed by NEON, where she posed in a sleek white bodycon dress alongside co-stars Lucy Liu and Julia Fox. The second, taken roughly a year later, shows her fully transformed into Chun-Li on the set of Legendary’s upcoming ‘Street Fighter‘ reboot, complete with the character’s signature blue costume, hair buns, and visibly muscular frame.
The physical difference between the two photos wasn’t accidental. Liang was officially cast as Chun-Li in June 2025, and in the months since, she’s spoken openly about the intense preparation required to embody one of gaming’s most physically iconic characters.

Speaking to Empire magazine, Liang detailed a demanding regimen built specifically around Chun-Li’s fighting style. “Chun-Li is all kicks. So we did a bunch of Taekwondo training, Muay Thai, and Wushu,” she explained, describing two hours of daily training paired with a significant dietary overhaul. By her own account, the process pushed her physically to her limits, but resulted in her thighs growing roughly six and a half centimeters each by the time filming wrapped.

The shift also marks a notable departure in the type of role Liang has taken on. In ‘Presence,’ she played Chloe, a haunted teenager navigating grief and an unsettling supernatural presence in her family’s new home, a performance that leaned entirely on emotional vulnerability rather than physicality.
Chun-Li demands almost the opposite skill set, requiring Liang to convincingly embody one of Street Fighter’s most physically dominant characters. That range, from quiet psychological horror to full-scale action tentpole, has become a central part of why fans have responded so strongly to the comparison photos circulating online.

Reaction to the transformation has been overwhelmingly positive, with many pointing to the comparison as proof of just how seriously Liang approached the role. Some of the same online conversation that once questioned whether her muscular build was digitally enhanced has shifted toward genuine appreciation for the visible work behind it.
With ‘Street Fighter’ set for release on October 16, the growing wave of BTS content and side-by-side transformation photos appears to be doing exactly what a promotional rollout hopes to achieve. Between the physical commitment and the range on display across her recent projects, Liang’s trajectory over the past year has quickly become one of the more compelling actor stories heading into the film’s release.
