Callum Turner found himself facing the James Bond question almost immediately while attending the Berlin Film Festival this week. The actor was at the festival to promote his new movie Rosebush Pruning when reporters quickly shifted focus to the long-running rumor that he could be the next 007.

According to coverage from Variety and other outlets present at the press conference, the question came just minutes after the panel began. A journalist admitted it might be best to address the topic early. Turner, 35, reacted with a smile and made it clear he was not ready to talk about it. You’re right, it’s very early for that question, he said. I’m not going to comment on it.

The moment lightened when his co-star Tracy Letts jumped in with a joke, telling the room, I’m sorry, I’m the next James Bond! The comment drew laughter from the audience. Turner played along and responded, Tracy, I thought you weren’t going to say anything.

The Bond chatter did not stop there. Soon after, director Karim Aïnouz was asked what his version of a Bond film would look like if he ever made one. Letts once again cracked a joke, saying Aïnouz would be directing my James Bond, keeping the mood playful and easing pressure off Turner.

Turner’s name has been linked to the Bond role in recent months as Denis Villeneuve prepares to work on a new James Bond movie for Amazon. While nothing has been confirmed, the speculation has followed Turner closely during his recent public appearances.

The press conference was mainly focused on Rosebush Pruning, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. The film centers on a wealthy American family whose relationships begin to fall apart after years of secrets and control. Turner stars alongside a large cast that includes Jamie Bell, Lukas Gage, Pamela Anderson, and others. Riley Keough and Elle Fanning also appear in the film but were not present at the panel.

Politics also came up during the discussion, a common topic at the Berlin Film Festival. Tracy Letts addressed it carefully, explaining that he prefers not to shift attention away from the film itself. Still, he noted that the movie explores how wealth gaps can lead to harmful behavior and power abuse. This disparity of wealth breeds bad behavior and, in fact, creates fascism, he said.

Director Karim Aïnouz has also spoken about the darker themes in the film in an interview with Variety. He said the story looks at violence within families and how harmful cycles are passed down. Only through absurdity can you perhaps touch certain issues, he explained. Sometimes the biggest amount of violence comes from within the family.

Turner remains focused on his work rather than rumors. His calm response suggests he knows the spotlight is only growing brighter, whether he becomes Bond or not.
