Many movies and shows from the Star Wars franchise are seeing a rise in views again. But one series in particular is getting a lot of attention, even though it was canceled. That show is The Acolyte.

The series first came out in 2024. Critics mostly liked it, but the reaction from audiences was very different. On sites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb, the show was hit with review-bombing. This is when groups of users leave very low scores on purpose. It often happens to projects that feature diverse casts. Similar things happened to films like Captain Marvel and Ghostbusters: Answer the Call.

Even with all that negativity, The Acolyte is still doing well in one important way. According to FlixPatrol, it has spent 30 days on the domestic Disney+ chart. That means people are still watching it, and a lot of them are discovering it now.

The show was created by filmmaker Leslye Headland and takes place before the Skywalker Saga. It follows a different time in the Star Wars universe and focuses on darker themes. The cast includes Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Dafne Keen, Jodi Turner-Smith, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Manny Jacinto.

Even though critics gave it a 74% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score is much lower at 19%. This gap shows how divided the reaction has been.

The show did not get a second season. Lucasfilm said the main reasons were its high cost and lower-than-expected viewership. Reports say the budget was around $230 million. That is a big number, but it is still smaller than some other Star Wars projects. For example, Andor reportedly cost about $650 million for two seasons, while The Rise of Skywalker had a budget close to $500 million.

The timing of this renewed interest is not random. Fans are getting ready for new Star Wars projects. One of them is The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will be the first Star Wars movie in several years. There are also more shows coming, including Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling.

Even though The Acolyte had a rough run when it first released, its current popularity shows that things can change. Sometimes a show finds its audience later, long after the headlines and early reactions fade away.
