‘Cape Fear’s’ Episode 7 Twist Just Rewrote Everything We Thought We Knew About Max Cady

Summer television rarely gets as unsettling as ‘Cape Fear’ has managed to be over the past several weeks. Apple TV’s reimagining of the classic revenge thriller has spent its run turning quiet suburban dread into something closer to psychological horror, and audiences have been picking apart every new episode almost in real time.

The series follows attorneys Anna and Tom Bowden, played by Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson, as they face the return of Max Cady, a convict Anna once helped put away who is now free and hungry for revenge. Javier Bardem stars as Cady, with Lily Collias, Joe Anders and Malia Pyles rounding out the family at the center of his campaign, alongside a supporting cast that includes CCH Pounder, Jamie Hector and Anna Baryshnikov. The show draws from the same source material that inspired both the 1962 original and Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake, with Scorsese and Steven Spielberg on board as executive producers this time around.

Now Collider’s cast interview around Episode 7, titled ‘Mongrel’, has confirmed just how far Max’s campaign against the Bowdens has gone. The episode opens right where the previous chapter left off, with Cady’s daughter Nevaeh caught hiding inside the Bowdens’ home, while Zach wanders off drugged and Natalie’s parentage becomes an open question. It is, by any measure, the moment the show’s slow burn finally catches fire.

Bardem broke down exactly what Max is after when he spoke with Collider about the episode. The actor explained that Max is using every tool at his disposal to create chaos and vulnerability inside the Bowden household, turning the family’s own children into the delivery system for his revenge. Adams backed that up in the same conversation, noting that Max is exploiting every opportunity he can find to get to Anna and Tom through their kids.

Adams also used the interview to unpack why this episode marks such a turning point for Anna specifically. She told Collider that Anna reaches a place where she stops doubting her own instincts about Max after years of guilt over the case and the toll it has taken on her marriage and career. It is a shift that reframes Anna less as a victim waiting to be rescued and more as someone bracing to fight back on her own terms.

Wilson, meanwhile, teased just how far Tom is willing to go once the rules of the situation stop applying. Speaking to Collider, he said Tom will do “anything” once his family and marriage are put to the test, framing the season’s back half as a question of how far anyone would go for revenge. Critics have responded well to that ambiguity so far, with the series holding a 77 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 66 reviews and a 68 out of 100 score on Metacritic.
