‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ Character Set to Return in VisionQuest

Marvel loves planting seeds that take years to bloom, and ‘VisionQuest’ might be about to harvest one of its oldest. As the Disney+ series gears up for its premiere, a brief flash of fire in the latest promo has fans convinced that the original Human Torch is finally stepping into the MCU spotlight.

The show is set to cap off what Marvel has called the “WandaVision trilogy,” following Paul Bettany’s White Vision as he searches for answers about his identity. It’s also bringing back James Spader as Ultron for the first time in 11 years, alongside a roster of artificial intelligence characters from across the franchise, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., and even the robot arm D.U.M.-E.

Now, Marvel Television has released a new 34-second teaser, and one moment has fans buzzing. At the 29-second mark, the footage shows a man engulfed in flames standing in the middle of a large library inside Vision’s Mindspace, with Vision looking down at him.

Many believe the burning figure is Jim Hammond, the android who became Marvel Comics’ original Human Torch. MCU-focused outlet The Direct shared the image side by side with a famous shot from ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, teasing that Hammond may be returning 15 years after his first MCU nod, and the post quickly made the rounds.

That earlier nod came during the Stark Expo scene set in 1943. A massive glass case displayed a bright red costume labeled as Phineas T. Horton’s “Synthetic Man,” a subtle reference to the character known in the comics as Hammond’s creator.

For years, it remained little more than a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it detail. If Hammond truly appears in ‘VisionQuest’, the tease would finally become part of the MCU’s official story.

Hammond made his debut in ‘Marvel Comics’ #1 back in 1939, published by Marvel’s predecessor, Timely Comics, and was created by Carl Burgos. He predates Johnny Storm by decades, and unlike the Fantastic Four hero, he’s a synthetic being rather than a human.

In the comics, Hammond developed human-like awareness and took on a secret identity as a New York City police officer. He fought crime as the Human Torch and even aided the Allies during World War II.

His connection to Vision is what makes this appearance so intriguing. In the comics, Vision was created when Ultron found Hammond’s lifeless android body and infused it with Wonder Man’s essence, with Hammond’s memories erased and his powers altered.

This isn’t the first hint that Hammond is on his way. At D23, the ‘VisionQuest’ booth featured a painting of a figure engulfed in flames standing in the middle of a road, which fans immediately linked to the original Torch.

Promo art and merchandise have added even more fuel. One design is labeled J.I.M., standing for Joule Individual Machine Head Assessment, which fans quickly tied to Hammond, while other artwork teased Tommy Maximoff’s future codename, Speed.

Insider Daniel Richtman has also reported that Hammond will appear in the series. Some outlets now describe the new teaser as effectively confirming his arrival, though Marvel has not officially announced any casting or explained how he’ll fit into the story.

Since Vision reportedly spends much of the series navigating an inner world built from fragments of memories, placing Hammond in that headspace could let Marvel explore the character without stepping on Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm. The fact that he’s burning inside a paper-filled library may also hint that he’s there to cause chaos.
