Carrie Coon Steals the Spotlight at ‘The Gilded Age’ Season 4 Premiere as Bertha Russell’s Next Chapter Nears
The wait is almost over for fans of HBO’s lavish period drama. ‘The Gilded Age’ Season 4 returns on November 1, and the cast marked the occasion with a star-studded New York City premiere that blended old-world glamour with thoroughly modern fashion.
The red carpet event took place on Monday, October 26, at 787 Seventh Avenue. Modern glamour was the unofficial dress code of the night, with many stars turning to the latest spring 2027 runway collections in a striking contrast to the show’s 1880s setting.
Leading the pack was Carrie Coon, who plays the ambitious Bertha Russell. The actor brought plenty of energy to the red carpet, as captured in a video shared by Page Six, smiling and playfully moving for the cameras.
Coon wore an Acne Studios Spring 2027 look that perfectly bridged past and present. Her ensemble featured a glossy, sleeveless gray-blue bodice paired with a voluminous skirt covered in floral bouquets on a beige background, a design many saw as a subtle nod to the show’s period costumes.
Coon was joined by a long list of co-stars, including Morgan Spector, Cynthia Nixon, Denée Benton, Louisa Jacobson, Taissa Farmiga, Harry Richardson and Audra McDonald. Kelley Curran, Ben Ahlers, Jack Gilpin, Peter Gallagher and Dennis Haysbert also walked the carpet, while Rebecca Hall stepped out alongside Spector.

One notable absence was Christine Baranski, who plays the formidable Agnes van Rhijn. Some fans joked that skipping the party felt fitting for her famously unimpressed character.
The new season picks up after a dramatic Season 3 finale in which Bertha and George Russell’s marriage finally fractured. Tensions had been building over Bertha’s decision to marry off their daughter Gladys to the Duke of Buckingham, and the couple ultimately split.

According to the official logline, Bertha changed Society at a cost, and now her family must reckon with the consequences. Coon has explained that George still hasn’t forgiven Bertha for what he sees as a transgression, while noting that society is the only sphere where Bertha truly gets to operate.
Meanwhile, Agnes seizes an opportunity to regain her position, Marian forges a new path, and Peggy works to win over her future in-laws. The season is set in 1885 and 1886, according to writer and producer Sonja Warfield.
HBO’s trailer offers a glimpse of a surprising scene in which Agnes dines with Bertha in the Russell mansion. It also hints at a presidential dinner for Agnes, a possible reunion between Marian and Larry, and wedding tensions for Peggy and William. George will face a formidable new rival in John D. Rockefeller. The season will also reportedly feature the dedication of the Statue of Liberty.

Haysbert joins as Reginald Harris, William Kirkland’s mentor, who visits New York to fundraise for the Freedman’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. Created by Julian Fellowes, the series filmed its fourth season in New York between February and August 2026.

‘The Gilded Age’ Season 4 premieres Sunday, November 1, at 9 p.m. on HBO and HBO Max. The 8-episode season will air weekly, wrapping up with its finale on December 20. HBO has not yet renewed the series beyond this season. For now, judging by Coon’s red carpet spirit, Bertha Russell is ready for whatever battles high society throws her way.
