Cast Revealed: Actresses Playing the Beatles’ Wives in Sam Mendes’ Upcoming Beatles Biopics Announced
After months of speculation, Sony Pictures has confirmed the actresses who will play the wives of The Beatles in Sam Mendes’ ambitious four-part film series, The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event.
The project will tell the story of each band member through a separate film, marking the first time The Beatles and Apple Corps Ltd. have officially allowed their life stories and music to be used in scripted films.
The newly announced cast includes Mia McKenna-Bruce, Saoirse Ronan, Anna Sawai, and Aimee Lou Wood, each taking on one of the women who played a key role in the band members’ lives.
McKenna-Bruce will portray Maureen (Cox) Starkey, Ringo Starr’s first wife; Ronan will play Linda (Eastman) McCartney, Paul McCartney’s first wife; Sawai takes on the role of Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s partner; and Wood will portray Pattie Boyd, George Harrison’s first wife.
Director Sam Mendes expressed excitement about the ensemble, saying, “Maureen, Linda, Yoko and Pattie are four fascinating and unique figures in their own right, and I’m thrilled that we’ve managed to persuade four of the most talented women working in film today to join this amazing adventure.”
Each of the four actresses brings strong credentials to the table. McKenna-Bruce gained attention for her performance in How to Have S**, which earned her both a BAFTA Rising Star Award and a British Independent Film Award.
Ronan, one of the youngest performers ever to receive four Oscar nominations, is known for acclaimed roles in Lady Bird, Little Women, and Brooklyn. Sawai’s breakout role in FX’s Shōgun earned her both Emmy and Golden Globe awards, while Wood became a household name with Sex Education and recently received an Emmy nomination for The White Lotus.
The upcoming films will also star Paul Mescal as McCartney, Barry Keoghan as Starr, Joseph Quinn as Harrison, and Harris Dickinson as Lennon. Each story will center on one of the Beatles, offering a unique perspective on the band’s rise, relationships, and cultural impact. Mendes will direct all four films, with scripts written by Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan, and Jack Thorne.
Produced by Mendes’ Neal Street Productions in collaboration with Sony Pictures and Apple Corps, the films are set to hit theaters in April 2028. Sony will both finance and distribute the series.
