Cate Blanchett recently appeared in the finale of Squid Game’s latest season, sparking excitement about a possible American spinoff of the hit series.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Netflix is developing an English-language adaptation of Squid Game produced by David Fincher. Blanchett has now spoken about her cameo in the series finale and her thoughts on joining the upcoming U.S. spinoff.

Season 3 of Squid Game ended by showing that the deadly games are now happening all over the world. Blanchett made a guest appearance as a recruiter in Los Angeles, playing ddakji, a traditional Korean game.

The cameo seemed to set the stage for the planned American adaptation. Talking about her role, Blanchett explained that it was a very secretive job. “Because it’s such a cult series and they were shooting in L.A. of all places, everyone was on a need-to-know basis. I got a couple of storyboards. I had to [learn to] play the game very quickly. I had to practice and practice. I knew there were four or five setups that they were going to do, and I knew what they needed from every shot, and then I was given the sides. But it was one of the more mysterious jobs,” she said.

Blanchett also addressed the possibility of returning for the American spinoff, especially with David Fincher producing. She spoke fondly of working with him in the past during The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

“I am wildly open to anything. And in a world that is so beautifully, magically created like that, for sure. They’re amazing world-builders, and that series has been eaten alive. I don’t think there’s a corner of the globe that it hasn’t touched in some way,” Blanchett said. She added, “I mean, I’d love to work with David [Fincher] again. It’s been ages. But no, I don’t know anything more than you do. I’m not being coy. I really don’t.”

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, has left the future open for more seasons. After Season 3, he hinted that there could be a Season 4 but did not give a definite answer. He has also mentioned the potential for expanding the Squid Game world, including exploring unanswered questions and character backstories.

Netflix is clearly interested in growing the franchise. Besides the main series, they greenlit another season of Squid Game: The Challenge, a British reality show inspired by the original show. Fans are hopeful this means more Squid Game content, whether it’s a new season or spin-offs.

When asked about the future of the series on Good Morning America, Hwang said, “There’s a saying, ‘Never say never.’ Yeah, I never close the door… we will see. It’s still up in the air.” His vague response has only added to the anticipation, leaving fans eager to see what comes next.

The American spinoff and future seasons of Squid Game remain a mystery, but with Blanchett involved and Fincher producing, the excitement is already building.
