CBS Drops Major News on the Fate of Three NCIS Shows
CBS is keeping the NCIS universe for now with some big renewal news. On Thursday, the network announced that the original NCIS series will return for Season 24, making it one of the longest-running dramas in television history.
Along with the main show, NCIS: Origins will come back for Season 3, and NCIS: Sydney has been renewed for a fourth season. The information comes directly from CBS and Paramount’s official announcements.
These renewals are part of a huge day for CBS, which also brought back ten other shows at once. Popular dramas like Tracker, Elsbeth, and Matlock are all returning, and reality fans can celebrate the renewals of Survivor and The Amazing Race. Even newer comedies, such as Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, will continue with a third season.
The main NCIS series still features its core cast, including Sean Murray, Wilmer Valderrama, and Gary Cole. The show follows special agents who solve crimes involving the Navy and Marine Corps. Created by Donald P. Bellisario, it remains a hit for the network and is preparing to celebrate its 500th episode this March.
NCIS: Origins gives fans a look at a younger version of Leroy Jethro Gibbs during the 1990s. Austin Stowell plays the young Gibbs, while Mark Harmon, the original Gibbs actor, narrates the show. “It’s a chance to see how Gibbs started his career long before the original series,” CBS said in a press release.
NCIS: Sydney brings an international twist to the franchise. Now heading into its fourth season, the show follows a team of U.S. and Australian agents working together in Australia. Olivia Swann and Todd Lasance lead the cast as they tackle dangerous missions in a busy part of the ocean.
While CBS is renewing many shows, the network recently decided to cancel the spin-off NCIS: Tony & Ziva. The network appears focused on keeping its main broadcast series strong instead of only pursuing streaming-exclusive projects. CBS continues to be home to some of the most-watched shows on television today.
Other shows that were renewed include Fire Country, which will return for a fifth season. The drama follows a convict named Bode who joins a firefighting program to find redemption in his hometown. Even though the show has lost its original lead producer, it remains an important part of CBS’s Friday night lineup.
