Speculation spread quickly online after drag performer Alexis Stone hinted on Instagram that he had stepped in as Jim Carrey during the recent César Awards in Paris. The post showed prosthetics and styling that looked similar to the actor’s appearance at the ceremony. This led some people to question whether the Hollywood star had really been there in person.

The rumors gained traction even though Carrey had attended the February 26 event with members of his family and delivered an emotional speech while accepting an honorary award. The ceremony marked a major moment in his career, as he followed Julia Roberts as the latest recipient of the special honor.

According to Variety, César Awards general delegate Gregory Caulier addressed the claims directly. He described the speculation as “a non-issue” and confirmed that Carrey’s visit was genuine. He explained that the appearance had been planned months in advance and involved careful preparation.

“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation. Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words,” Caulier said.

He also noted that Carrey arrived with close relatives and longtime collaborators. Among those present was filmmaker Michel Gondry, who has worked with the actor in the past.

During the ceremony, Carrey spoke about his connection to France. He shared that one of his ancestors, Marc-François Carré, was born in Saint-Malo centuries ago before the family moved to Canada. He also paid tribute to his father, Percy Joseph Carrey, calling him “the funniest man I have ever known” who “taught me the value of love, generosity and laughter.”

The event itself featured several nods to Carrey’s career. Host Benjamin Lavernhe performed a musical tribute inspired by the actor’s famous role in The Mask. Carrey’s performances in films like The Truman Show were also celebrated as part of the evening’s homage.

Caulier later summed up the night by saying, “For me, it’s a non-issue. I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance.”

This situation shows how quickly online speculation can grow, even when facts are clear. A single post can turn into a full conspiracy in hours. At the same time, it also proves how strong Carrey’s legacy still is. People remain fascinated by him decades into his career.
