Channing Tatum Jokes About ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Role: “Might Just Be a Chair, Not Gambit”

Channing Tatum is officially part of the star-studded Marvel film Avengers: Doomsday, but according to him, his role may not be as big as fans hope — at least not yet.
Tatum recently spoke with Extra’s Roqui Theus during CinemaCon 2025, where he was honored with the Distinguished Decade of Achievement in Film award. While reflecting on his 20-year career, the actor took a moment to talk about his connection to the upcoming Marvel movie and what he’s been told so far.
When asked about joining the massive Avengers: Doomsday cast, Channing playfully downplayed his involvement. “Personally, all I was guaranteed was a chair,” he laughed. “They said that I have a chair, and I can at least watch the movie from the chair. You know, and it was just my name, it wasn’t exactly Gambit.”
Tatum has long been associated with the Marvel character Gambit, a fan-favorite mutant known for his charm, card-throwing powers, and ties to the X-Men, Tatums dreams finally came true when he portrayed the character in last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine.
While many fans were excited to see his name on the cast list for Avengers: Doomsday, Tatum made it clear that nothing is confirmed — at least not on his end. “So, I work in the world of just like, of binary yes or no’s,” he added. “And I’ve only been guaranteed so far a chair to watch the movie in, so that’s where I’m at.”
Though Tatum made the comment with a smile, it’s clear that even he is still waiting to find out how involved he’ll really be in the film. For now, fans will have to stay patient to see whether Channing will finally bring Gambit to life on the big screen after years of rumors, canceled projects, and teases.
Aside from Avengers, Tatum took a moment to reflect on receiving the CinemaCon award and what it means to look back on two decades of filmmaking. “They, like, sent me this thing that they’re gonna play, and I was pretty uncomfortable watching it,” he admitted. “I’m not one of the actors that really is comfortable watching themselves as much as I like doing the movies, I guess.”
