Charles Melton’s Reported Exit Throws Marvel’s X-Men Cast Reveal Into Chaos Ahead Of D23
The countdown to Disney’s biggest fan convention of the year has entertainment circles buzzing, and mutants have dominated the conversation for weeks. Marvel Studios has been quietly building out its long awaited ‘X-Men’ reboot under ‘Thunderbolts*’ director Jake Schreier, with fans eagerly tracking every casting rumor tied to the project. Samara Weaving was officially confirmed as Emma Frost in a Variety report published on July 31, 2026, while Sadie Sink has been attached as Jean Grey since her debut in ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’.
Sink, Weaving and Kit Connor, cast as Cyclops, are currently the only actors locked in for Schreier’s untitled film, with additional casting announcements long expected to arrive at D23. Among the names fans had grown most confident about was Charles Melton, the ‘May December’ and ‘Beef’ star who had been the presumed frontrunner to play Hank McCoy, also known as Beast, for nearly two months.
That confidence took a hit when X-Men Updates posted that Melton has reportedly dropped out of the role entirely, citing insider Daniel Richtman as the source of the claim. The account’s post noted that the full roster reveal originally expected at the Disney showcase may no longer happen as a result, a suggestion that has sent fans into a scramble just days before the panel.
Murphy’s Multiverse independently reported a similar account, noting that despite the pairing being well received among fans, Melton may not be part of the cast after all, and that Marvel executives may need to change their D23 plans even though they reportedly have other options on the table. Other insiders have painted an even messier picture behind the scenes. One widely shared post claimed Marvel now has to either convince Melton to return or find a replacement before the convention, describing the situation as unusually chaotic given the short timeline involved.
The timing stings given how close Melton seemed to confirming the role just weeks earlier. Speaking to The Playlist while promoting Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘Her Private Hell’, the actor was asked directly about the Beast rumors and responded with a playful redirect, joking “Wow. Who’s directing?” before learning it was his ‘Beef’ collaborator Schreier behind the camera. When pressed on whether the project interested him, Melton said it absolutely did, calling it “a dream.”
Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ movie is deep into development and expected to begin filming in 2027, with a summer 2028 release believed to be occupying either the May or July date Disney has reserved for the studio. Beyond the confirmed trio, speculation ahead of D23 has also linked Bill Skarsgård and Patrick Wilson to Professor X, Adam Driver to a villain role, and names like Cailee Spaeny, Inde Navarrette, Jayme Lawson and Drew Starkey to other core mutants. None of that speculation, including the Melton exit report, has been confirmed by Marvel Studios itself.
