For decades, the One Ring has been the beating heart of ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Fans have watched it corrupt kings, tempt hobbits, and drive an entire epic toward Mount Doom, but the moment Sauron actually forged it has mostly lived in the imagination.

Peter Jackson’s film trilogy only showed brief glimpses of that history in flashbacks. Now Prime Video’s ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ is preparing to tell that story in much greater depth as its new season approaches.

Charlie Vickers, who plays Sauron, says season 3 will finally bring that pivotal moment to the screen. He describes the season as Sauron’s journey toward making the Ring, the moment he was most excited to see the series tackle.

“Everyone knows about the One Ring when it comes to Lord of the Rings,” Vickers told ComicBook.com, adding that showing how Sauron made it is something that has never been done on screen in a long format.

He also seemed confident about the result. Vickers said he believes the team has created a cool interpretation of the forging, giving fans a much closer look at one of Middle-earth’s most important events.

The forging won’t be a simple triumph for the villain. Showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne have said Sauron begins the season not knowing how to make the Ring, and the season presents him as a person with ambitions and insecurities.

That struggle is built into the story. Vickers has revealed that Sauron spends much of the season failing again and again as he works alone, haunted by his decision to kill Celebrimbor.

This season, Sauron has also dropped his earlier disguises. He’s no longer posing as Halbrand or Annatar, instead stepping fully into his role as the Dark Lord ruling from Barad-dûr.

The production design reflects that transformation. Production designer Kristian Milsted explained that this early version of Barad-dûr sits on the slope of Mount Doom and mirrors Celebrimbor’s forge in Eregion, echoing Tolkien’s idea that evil can only imitate.

Sauron’s throne is made from the melted helms of defeated elves, surrounded by black volcanic columns. Black Speech is engraved on the walls, and the inscriptions echo the text later found on the One Ring itself.

The Ring isn’t the only storyline drawing attention. The new season introduces Jamie Campbell Bower as Celeborn, Galadriel’s long-lost husband, and trailers have hinted at tension between him, Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel, and Sauron.

Clark has already pushed back on the idea of a true love triangle, suggesting Sauron only imagines he’s part of one. Even so, the Dark Lord’s obsession with Galadriel could add another layer to his quest for power. ‘The Rings of Power’ season 3 premieres on Prime Video on November 11 with 4 episodes. Episodes 5 and 6 arrive on November 18, followed by the final 2 episodes on November 25.

The 8-episode season also explores the origins of the Nazgûl and reportedly sets up a clash with the Balrog of Moria. With the One Ring finally taking shape, the series is heading into its most consequential chapter yet. For longtime Tolkien fans, seeing the forging of the Ring in full may be the moment they’ve waited years for. Vickers’ confidence suggests the show is ready to deliver it.
