Charlize Theron brought a powerful sense of gravitas to the 2026 Winter Olympics, closing out the opening ceremony with a poignant call for global unity. The South African-born actress, 50, took the stage at Milan’s San Siro Stadium on Friday, February 6, in her official capacity as a United Nations Messenger of Peace.
Her surprise appearance followed a series of high-energy performances, shifting the tone of the night toward a more reflective message inspired by the legacy of Nelson Mandela. Standing near a symbolic dove on the stadium floor, Theron addressed the thousands of athletes and spectators with a plea for understanding.
She shared a quote from her beloved countryman, stating that peace is not just the absence of conflict but rather the creation of an environment where all can flourish. The actress emphasized that these markers of peace should apply to everyone, regardless of their race, religion, gender, or any other social marker of difference.
Theron’s appearance was especially symbolic given that she spent a year living in Milan as a teenager while working as a model. She noted that the message of peace seems more relevant than ever in the current global climate, urging the world to see the Games as a reminder of common humanity.
Her speech concluded just before the final torchbearers completed their journey, leading to the historic simultaneous lighting of two Olympic cauldrons in Milan and Cortina. The ceremony also featured a heavy dose of Italian culture and pop stardom, with Mariah Carey performing her original song “Nothing Is Impossible” earlier in the evening.
Andrea Bocelli also moved the crowd with a rendition of “Nessun Dorma” shortly before Theron stepped into the spotlight. The event followed the adoption of the Olympic Truce Resolution by UN Member States, which aims to promote a culture of peace throughout the duration of the 2026 Games.
